Deebo Samuel is an American football wide receiver. His full name is Tyshun Raequan Samuel and ‘Deebo’ is a nickname that he is popularly known. Samuel went pro after a successful career in school as well as college. He had been drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the Second Round of the 2019 (National Football League) NFL Draft as the 36th overall draft of the season. Despite his young age, he has been identified as a fast-rising football star by the experts in the field.
Deebo Samuel Early Life and Background
Deebo Samuel was born on January 15, 1996, as one of the three children of Galen and Precious Samuel in Inman, South Carolina. He had been interested in the sport from a very young age. His experience of bullying in school is said to have determined his position as a wide receiver. Deebo went to Chapman High School and was part of their football team. His coach at school really encouraged him and in his senior year, the player received much attention from the popular media. He led his school team to the AAA playoffs semifinals and was named the AAA Offensive Player of the Year. He also played in the Shrine Bowl while still in school and recorded 36 touchdowns, and 166 catches for 2,751 yards. He was recruited by the University of South Carolina where he continued his career as part of the college team.
Deebo played college football for five years with the South Carolina Gamecocks by redshirting his first year in 2014. He was injured in his freshman year and was able to appear in only five games. His sophomore year in 2016 was an overall success for the wide receiver. In that year, he played in 10 games and led the team with 59 receptions for 783 yards, and also rushed 15 times for 98 yards and six touchdowns. He had 14 receptions for 190 receiving yards in the Birmingham Bowl against the University of South Florida. During his junior season in 2017, Deebo sustained a very serious injury where his knee bent backward and this cut his entire season short. The next season was relatively more successful wherein he finished with 882 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns. He was eventually selected to play in the 2019 Senior Bowl for his outstanding performance. During the same year, Samuel was among the few American football players who were called on to play in the All-star Senior Bowl.

In the 2019 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers drafted Deebo as the 36th overall pick.
The 49ers had drafted their pass rusher Nick Bosa in the First Round as the 2nd overall pick of the same season. In July 2019, Deebo signed a 4-year contract with the 49ers.
Deebo Samuel NFL Journey
Samuel’s first game after his draft took place in September 2019 and was against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His career graph has been rising ever since his first game. In the first season, Deebo was able to play in the Super Bowl LIV with 53 rushing yards which had been the most by a wide receiver in the history of the Super Bowl. Even though the club lost the game against the Kansas City Chiefs 31-40, Deebo recorded 5 passes in 39 yards during this Super Bowl showdown. The following season was unfortunate for the player as he spent most of his time as an injured reserve. In the 12th week of the season, against the Los Angeles Rams, Deebo had 11 receptions for 133 receiving yards and led the 49ers towards a 23–20 victory. Samuel finished the 2020 season with 33 receptions for 391 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. In 2021, Samuel had more rushing touchdowns of 10+ yards than 23 NFL teams and he made eight rushing touchdowns which is a record for a wide receiver.

San Francisco 49ers (2019-Present)
Deebo Samuel signed a four-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers on July 25, 2019. While his performance was average in the first match of the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers which the 49ers went on to win, he made his first NFL touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals in his second match as a 49er. He also caught five passes for 87 yards in the same match that the 49ers went on to win on the road by a score of 41–17. His performance kept on improving in every match thereon and in the regular-season finale, in a match against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football, Deebo caught 5 passes for 102 yards and rushed twice for 33 yards, and made a touchdown in the winning match for his club. It was in the same year that the young wide receiver was able to participate in his first Super Bowl match. In the Super Bowl LIV in which the 49ers went up against the Kansas City Chiefs, Samuel rushed for 53 yards which set a record as it was the most yards covered by a wide receiver in the history of the Super Bowl.
After being injured for most of the second season as a pro, Deebo made a comeback in 2021 where in his first match playing against the Detroit Lions he caught nine passes for 189 yards and a touchdown. By the 10th week of the season, Deebo had received the NFC Offensive Player of the Week honor twice. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time in the same year and was named a First Team All-Pro. The club had changed his position mid-season making him play as a running back which made Deebo coin the term wide-back at the 2022 Pro Bowl. He was ranked 19th by his fellow players on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2022. After having signed a three-year contract extension with the 49ers in 2022, Samuel injured his ankle and was unable to participate in several matches of the season.

However the wide receiver is very close to his stepmother, Precious Martin, who Galen had met when he was six years old.
