Le'Veon Bell: A Brief Biography

Le'Veon Bell

Le'Veon Andrew Bell Sr., commonly known as Le’Veon Bell, is a 31-year-old running back who is currently a free agent. He has played eight seasons in the NFL with five different franchises till now and sat out the entire 2018 NFL season due to a contract holdout. Bell is known to be a patient runner who looks for the best opportunity before just taking off down the field. He has a unique style of being able to hold on to the ball and not get tackled while he waits for his blocker to create lanes for him to exploit and accelerate through.

In his prime, he was one of the most difficult players to guard and tackling him was not straightforward. He is also quite capable as a receiver as his good hands have shown time and again. In fact, his receiving skills were never seen before his entry into the NFL as he was never called upon to catch the ball in high school and college. Overall though, while his talent cannot be questioned, he could have had a much better career in the league than what it has turned out to be.

Le’Veon Bell Early Life

Bell was born on February 18, 1992, in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, which is a suburb of Ohio’s capital city Columbus. In his early days, the star running back grew up in what is called a tough neighborhood. Although the area was not known for any activities such as drugs, fighting, and crimes, it was still not the easiest place to grow up. Up until grade 6, Bell and his family belonged to that neighborhood but what it was known for was the hard-working people who lived there.

Being bigger than his age as a child, Bell got the chance to play with kids older than him. That helped him become a better player and also brought out the toughness in him. The former Steelers running back was always interested in sports, especially football and basketball. His talent on the field meant that his high school coaches had no doubt he would be the starting running back from day one.

He attended Groveport Madison High School in Groveport, Ohio as the family relocated to a new and better neighborhood. Even though he put up better and better numbers throughout his high school years, he was only rated as a two-star recruit and had very limited offers from Universities and none of them were from the top ones. Luckily for Bell, he caught a break as several running backs from Michigan State ran into some troubles before the new season which prompted their scouts to take a look at Bell. As a result of which, he got his chance to play for the Michigan State Spartans college football team.

Once again in college, he kept improving year-by-year and along with running back duties he also had return duties on punts and kickoffs. In his junior year, he had 382 carries, ran for 1,793 yards and had 12 rushing touchdowns on the year. His rushing yards for the season were the second-best in the Spartans’ history. It was also the second most in the entire Big Ten Conference in 2012.

Le’Veon Bell Personal Life

Bell was born to Lisa Bell while the details of his father are nowhere to be found. He also has two younger brothers. From a very young age, he has been interested in sports and always had a competitive attitude in life about winning. He hated to lose and would master anything and everything he set his mind to.

Apart from football, Bell has also had some success in the musical industry as well as a short boxing career. For his music career, he goes by the stage name ‘Juice’ and released a 16-song album in March 2017. He has since then released a single called ‘Target’ and four songs belonging to the project ‘My Side of Things’. Apparently the single and the four songs are in connection with his contract holdout with the Steelers. He also released an album known as "Life is a Gamble" in 2019.

As for boxing, Bell showed an interest in the sport and was seriously considering a career change at one point of time towards the end of 2021. He has only fought two professional fights losing by a unanimous decision to mixed martial arts fighter Uriah Hall on October 29, 2022 and winning against British YouTuber JMX in April 2023.

Le’Veon Bell Family Background

The 31-year-old’s family background is not as smooth sailing as he would have wanted. He is known to have two younger brothers and was born to his mother Lisa Bell. However, there is no mention of who his father is and apparently his father has not been in contact with them for several years.

Growing up, Bell’s mother took the onus on her shoulders to raise the family and she received great help from her parents and her older brother Clarence who all lived very close by. Le’Veon spent a lot of his time learning about the game of football from his uncle Clarence. He was the one who taught him about patience and to wait for blockers to create an opening before he started off running the ball. His uncle would take him and not only teach him about playing football but would also show him film of the games so Bell would understand where he made mistakes.

Le’Veon Bell Mother

Bell has credited his mother for turning him into the person he is today. Seeing her work hard inspired him to do the same. Although she was a strict mother, he says he understands why it was necessary and respects her for how she managed to bring up him as his siblings as a single-working parent.

Bell’s mother has stood by his side and the two have a very strong relationship together. While she is the one to have advised her son on most of life’s lessons, when it came to football it has been the other way around. For him, making things happen on the turf from nothing is exactly what his mother has done with her situation in life as she worked and took care of the family despite having nothing.

Le’Veon Bell Siblings

There are several reports in the media claiming that Bell has two older sisters as well as two younger brothers. However, whenever he has spoken to the media, there seems to be no mention of his sisters. Therefore that piece of information could not be verified.

Both of his brothers were also football players according to multiple reports, yet there is no further information about them.

Le’Veon Bell Wife/girlfriend

For the moment, Bell seems to be single and concentrating on his football career. As per sources, Bell has been involved in a few past relationships but information regarding the same is very hard to find. He has kept his personal life quite private and therefore there is no real evidence about his dating history.

Although not confirmed, he was reported to previously have been in a relationship with Mercedes Dollson, Marliesia Ortiz, Breonna Lee, Celina Powell, Lira Galore, Jourdan Taylor, and others.

Le’Veon Bell Kids

Once again, details regarding Bell’s kids are hazy as the truth behind them cannot be verified. He is said to have seven kids with six different women.

Back in 2021, he came under attack from a woman who referred to herself as “Golden Blondie,” claiming to be the mother of his sixth child named “Scotlyn Bell.” Apparently, she accused Bell of abandoning her and the child. There have been no comments from Bell regarding this incident.

He is also stated to have a daughter named Melodie Bell Dollson with former girlfriend Mercedes Dollson. Still, it is difficult to verify any of these claims and the exact number of Bell’s kids, if any, are controversial.

Le’Veon Bell Draft

After finishing his junior year at Michigan State in 2012, Bell decided to forgo his senior year and entered the 2013 NFL Draft. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round with the 48th overall pick. During scouting, he was projected to go in the second or the third round of the draft and was ranked as the fifth-best running back by NFLDraftScout.com.

The 2013 draft stood out as three of the first four selections were offensive tackles including Pro Bowlers, and number 1 and 4 selections, Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson respectively. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, tight end Travis Kelce, safety Tyrann Mathieu, and cornerback Micah Hyde are some more notable players from this draft class.

Le’Veon Bell NFL Journey

Bell’s NFL journey came to a start in 2013 with the Steelers and since then he has played nine years in the league. Starting out with the Steelers, he then couldn’t find a permanent place for himself as he bounced from one team to another until 2022. In that period, he has been named to three Pro Bowls and one First-Team and two Second-Team All-Pro selections.

Le’Veon Bell Teams

Pittsburgh Steelers (2013-2018)

The Ohio native started out strong in his rookie year despite missing out the first three weeks of the season with a foot injury. He still managed to rush for 860 yards and received 45 receptions for 399 yards. He had 8 rushing touchdowns and finished third in rushing yards for rookies and second in rushing touchdowns for all rookies.

Bell’s second year was his best one in terms of production. He started all 16 games for the Steelers and rushed for 1,361 and added 8 touchdowns again. On the receiving front, Bell caught 83 passes for 854 and had three receiving touchdowns.

The start of 2015 was not a good one for him as he and teammate LeGarrette Blount were arrested on DUI and marijuana possession charges. Bell missed the first two games of the season due to a suspension enforced by the NFL. After coming back in week 3, he then went on to play the next five games before his season came to an end due to a MCL injury.

The next two seasons were back-to-back good seasons as he passed 1,000 rushing yards and over 600 receiving yards each. With his help, the Steelers got back to the playoffs on both occasions. The 2016 season’s AFC Championship Game was especially tough as he had to leave the game due to a groin injury.

2018 was his last season with the Steelers and things quickly went downhill for Bell from there onwards. The Steelers placed a franchise tag on him due to which he held out and didn’t play the entire season. At the end of the season, he was let go and he became a free agent.

New York Jets (2019-2020)

In March 2019, Bell joined the New York Jets on a two-year deal. His performances were nowhere near what he had achieved in Pittsburgh in 2016 and 2017 as he finished 2019 with only 789 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns from 15 games.

The next season was once again a terrible one. Bell started the first game of the season and went down with a hamstring injury. Upon returning about a month later in a week 5 game, a controversy took place after the game when he liked a tweet that suggested he should be traded by the Jets. Within the next fortnight, the Jets released him midway through the season on October 13.

Kansas City Chiefs (2020)

On October 17, he signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs but his game time and production were both down as he was behind in the pecking order.

Baltimore Ravens (2021)

Bell’s stint with the Baltimore Ravens in 2021 was equally forgetful. He spent some time on the team’s practice squad and featured in only five games without a single start. He had just 83 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground. On November 16, 2021, he was released by the Ravens.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2021)

He was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on December 22, 2023. The time he spent with the Bucs would prove to be his last moments in the NFL. He featured in only 3 games. His 8 rushes resulted in only 18 yards. He was released by the team on January 22, 2022, and since then he has been a free agent.

Le’Veon Bell Net worth

Bell’s net worth has been reported as $14 million. As a nine-year veteran that Bell is, he should probably have had a higher net worth than this. After his 4-year rookie deal which was for a little over $4 million, he then signed a one-year franchise tag for $12 million.

His biggest payday came in 2019 when he signed his first massive contract worth $52.5 million with the Jets, but he was let go in less than two seasons. He had also signed a deal with the Jordan brand which is the only known brand endorsement of his.

Le’Veon Bell Brand ambassador

Even though Bell was at one point a star running back in the league, he had multiple seasons where he missed several games and was in the headlines for negative reasons. This is perhaps the reason why not many brands have done business with him. The only known brand endorsement Bell is known to have done is that of the Jordan brand back in 2018. Having said that, he may have a few local endorsements but nothing is known for sure.

Le’Veon Bell Investments

Currently, there is no information pertaining to the investments carried out by Le’Veon Bell.

Le’Veon Bell Achievements

With the level of talent possessed by Bell, he should easily have achieved much more success in the league. Unfortunately, that was not to be, but he still has earned a few accolades over his nine-year duration in the league. The following is a list of some of his achievements:

  • Became the first NFL player to rush for over 150 yards in his first two playoff games.

  • Holds the NFL playoff record with the most rushing yards in the first two games with 337.

  • First-team All-Pro - 2014

  • 2 time Second-team All-Pro - 2016 & 2017

Le’Veon Bell Contract

His last known contract was with the Baltimore Ravens who signed him to their practice squad for merely $168,000. The last couple of contracts for the former running back have resulted in really poor pay due to his diminishing performances.

Prior to this, he had a one-year deal with the Chiefs for $1,000,000. Before that, in 2019 he signed his biggest contract of 4 years for $52,500,000. But unfortunately, he was let go midway into his second season in New York.

Before the Jets, Bell had his rookie contract with the Steelers worth $4,120,600 for 4 years and then a one-year franchise tag contract worth $12,120,000.

Le’Veon Bell Diet

The former star player has had a lot of success in the league which he accounts towards his dietary plans. For Bell, he would ensure that he had plenty of eggs in his system. He used to have a chef to cook his main meals but whenever the chef was unavailable, he would eat fruits such as bananas, grapes, or egg whites.

Later on, he eventually turned towards a vegan diet. His pre-workout snack usually consisted of an energy bar. For breakfast, he would have tofu, soymilk, bagel, peanut butter, and other such combinations which would provide him with the required proteins.

His lunch would tend to be higher in calories and consisted of chickpeas, cubed tofu, rice, whole-wheat toast, and chopped fruits. Bell would then have his post-lunch snack in the evening which was baked tempeh or tofu, a banana, and a small quantity of dry fruits. To end the day, dinner would be a lighter meal consisting of chickpeas, tofu, rice, and chopped fruits.

Le’Veon Bell House

The current house of Bell is unknown. Since 2019, he has switched around with as many as four teams and hasn’t had a long stay with any of them. His only long-duration stay was with the Steelers when he was with them from 2013 to 2018. During this time he had purchased a house in Pittsburgh which he sold off last year.

His Pittsburgh house at the time cost him around $629,000. The 4 bedroom, 4.5 bathroom house came with a 3-car garage and a private backyard. It was located on 1.78 acres at the end of a cul-de-sac.

Bell is known to have a house in Ohio, where he grew up which he purchased in 2017. It is roughly 30 miles east of Columbus. He purchased the said house for $855,000. It comes with six bedrooms and five bathrooms. It is a huge 7,700 square feet mansion with lots of space on the outside.
