About New Orleans Saints

Competing in the NFC South division of the NFL, the New Orleans Saints are one of the expansion teams added to the NFL in 1966. The Saints had a difficult debut season in the NFL, losing 11 of their 14 games, similar to other expansion clubs. However, it took the squad 20 years to record their first successful season, making the futility of their efforts more apparent. The Saints had a successful run of form between 1987 and 1992 when they made it to the playoffs 4 times. The most important player for the Saints has been Drew Brees, who breathed life into a lackluster Saints side. After a prolonged absence from the NFL Playoffs, the Saints made it back to the postseason under trying circumstances. Since Hurricane Katrina's devastation forced the Saints to play all of their home games outside of New Orleans in 2005, the team's return to the playoffs in 2006 was particularly noteworthy. The Saints returned to the Superdome in 2006 and finished 10-6 under first-year head coach Sean Payton. Since 2017, the New Orleans Saints have picked up on their postseason record by appearing 4 times out of a possible 5. The New Orleans Saints franchise is currently valued at around $2.08 billion.

New Orleans Saints Championships

The New Orleans Saints faced one of the longest postseason droughts in the history of the game. They joined the league in 1967 but had to wait for two decades for their first postseason game. The Saints have managed a total of 14 playoff appearances where they have even won a Super Bowl in their only appearance. Super Bowl XLIV was the first time the Saints appeared in a Super Bowl and it has been their only appearance to date. After four consecutive playoff appearances since 2017, the Saints missed out on a spot for the 2021 playoffs, ending their streak.

The Saints hold 1 Conference Championship and 9 Divisional Championships apart from their Vince Lombardi trophy.

FAQs

The New Orleans Saints were rumored to likely relocate from New Orleans to Baton Rouge in Louisiana, but they stayed in New Orleans itself.

The current New Orleans Saints home stadium is the Caesars Superdome, also known as the Mercedes Benz Superdome. The stadium has previously hosted seven Super Bowl matches. The stadium is unique because it is the largest fixed dome structure in the world. In 2005, the Superdome housed thousands of people seeking shelter from Hurricane Katrina. The building suffered extensive damage as a result of the storm, and was closed for many months afterward. The building was fully refurbished and reopened in time for the Saints' 2006 home opener in September.

The New Orleans Saints are named as a homage to the rich jazz heritage in the city of New Orleans. The name is derived from a popular song "When the Saints Go Marching In" which to this day is still the team's fight song.

The Atlanta Falcons are the biggest rivals to the New Orleans Saints. The two teams have been competing since they were placed in the NFC West in 1970 and later the NFC South division in 2002. Currently the Saints and the Falcons have a head to head record which is tied at 54-54.
