About Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers was established when a 32-year-old hotel businessman Barron Hilton was awarded a Los Angeles franchise for the new American Football League in 1959. Although the Los Angeles Chargers won the AFL Western division championship in 1960, there was little fan support for the club, so in 1961, Hilton, encouraged by Jack Murphy, the sports editor for San Diego, moved his team 120 miles south to San Diego and came to be known as the San Diego Chargers.

To accommodate the Chargers, the historic Balboa Stadium's seating capacity was increased to 34,000. With the help of coach Sid Gillman, the Chargers in San Diego rose to become one of the real glamor squads of any era. In five of the first six seasons of the AFL, Gillman's initial teams were divisional winners thanks to their high-scoring, electrifying juggernauts.

In 2017, the Chargers relocated back to Los Angeles after 56 seasons in San Diego. Currently the Chargers compete in the AFC West division of the NFL. Forbes values the Los Angeles Chargers at $3.875 billion as of the current year.
