Aryna Sabalenka after winning the 2024 US Open

Aryna Siarhiejena Sabalenka was born in Belarus on May 5, 1998. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has ranked her as No. 1 in the world in singles as of November 2024. Sabalenka is one of the most fierce strikers of the tennis ball on tour, often dismissing her opponents with her brute force.

In 2023, Sabalenka advanced to the semifinal at each of the four Grand Slam events. After Iga Świątek lost to Jelena Ostapenko at the 2023 US Open, Sabalenka also became the World No.1 in the WTA. Unfortunately, she failed to hold onto the ranking until the end of the year. Since then, she has won 17 WTA singles titles in her career including the 2024 Italian Open and the 2024 Cincinnati Open. She lost to Donna Vekic in the final of the 2024 Dubai Tennis Championships. Sabalenka reached the final of the 2024 Madrid Open where she lost to World No. 1 Iga Swiatek by 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 in the final. She lost to her again a fortnight later, in the final of the Rome Open.

Aryna Sabalenka was not well-known until she and Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who were both outside the top 75 at the time, led the Belarus Fed Cup team to a runner-up finish in 2017. She started to experience more success on the WTA Tour after the 2017 Fed Cup, making it to four finals and earning eight top-ten victories in 2018. Her three victories in China included the WTA Elite Trophy at the year's end and a successful defense of her Wuhan Open title at the Premier 5 level. She finished the singles season ranked No. 11 in the world in both 2018 and 2019.

Her prowess isn't confined to singles, as she also has six doubles titles till date, including the US Open in 2019 and the Australian Open in 2021. By winning the WTA 1000 titles in Indian Wells and Miami in 2019, she won the Sunshine Double, a distinction attained by just four women's doubles pairs. She recently advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 US Open, defeating Qinwen Zheng in the quarterfinal.

In the final, they faced Victoria Azarenka and Ashleigh Barty, the eighth-seeded duo, whom they defeated in straight sets to win their first Grand Slam title. Sabalenka and Mertens then won the Australian Open doubles in 2021 with a score of 6–2, 6–3, against Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková.
