One of the greatest cricketers that the game has ever seen, Kapil Dev made his international debut against arch-rivals Pakistan in 1978. Over the course of the next 16 years, he went on to establish himself as a giant of the game.

A hard hitter of the cricket ball, a match-winning swing bowler and a gun fielder - Kapil Dev was a complete package. Throughout his career, he not only created and broke records, but also spearheaded India to some of their greatest moments.

Not only this, the 'Haryana Hurricane' also triggered a revolution that urged young boys - especially from smaller cities - to pick up the ball and do the hard yards, something that was unheard of in a country obsessed with batting.

• Kapil Dev is the youngest Test cricketer to take 100 (21 years & 25 days) and 300 wickets (27 years & 2 days)

• Youngest to complete 100, 200, 300 Test wickets.

• He remains the only player till date to complete a double of 5000+ runs (5248) and 400+ wickets (434) in Test match cricket.

• Dev also holds the record for claiming the most number of Test wickets by an Indian in a calendar year- 75 in 18 Tests in 1983.

• Kapil Dev is the only Test captain to take a nine-wicket haul in an innings. He achieved the feat against the mighty West Indies in Ahmedabad with figures of 9/83. His match figures of 10-135 are still the best by an Indian Test captain.

• Dev is the only Test player to score 600+ runs and take 70+ wickets in a calendar year– 619 runs & 74 wickets (17 Tests) in 1979.

• First player to hit four consecutive sixes in Tests - vs EE Hemmings at Lord's in 1990.

• He also holds the record of scoring the fastest half-century in Tests among Indians away from home. The swashbuckling batter hammered a 30-ball 50 against Pakistan in Faisalabad in 1982. He ultimately scored 73 off 53 deliveries.

• In 1994, Kapil Dev broke Sir Richard Hadlee's record of most Test wickets- 434.

• He is India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket behind R. Ashwin and Anil Kumble.

• Joint-record holder of scoring the fastest Test ton for India- in 74 deliveries against Sri Lanka in 1986.

• He also holds the record of not getting run-out in his entire Test career.

ODIs:

• First Indian to score a 100 in one-day cricket- 175 vs Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.

• First Indian to take a 5-wicket haul in ODIs- 5/43 vs Australia in the 1983 World Cup.

• Highest score while batting at 5 or below- 175* vs Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells.

• He broke Glenn Turner's record (171 vs East Africa in 1975) to become the highest individual scorer in an ODI.

• Kapil is the fastest centurion amongst Indians in World Cup history. His first 100 runs in that memorable 175* came off just 74 deliveries.

• Kapil's 253 ODI scalps were the joint-highest in the format's history when he retired in 1994.

• Kapil Dev led India to their maiden World Cup title in 1983.

Kapil Dev records in 1983

Dev was at the height of his powers, both as a player and as a captain, in 1983. The 'Haryana Hurricane' scored India's maiden ODI ton- 175* vs Zimbabwe- in addition to claiming the country's maiden five-wicket-haul- 5/43 vs Australia- at the Prudential World Cup.

His blistering 175 against Zimbabwe came after India had been reduced to 9-4 and 17-5. Dev's knock breathed life into India's campaign and his unbelievable catch to dismiss Vivian Richards in the final proved to be the final nail in the coffin as India did the 'unthinkable'.

India were crowned world champions and the video of Kapil Dev holding the Prudential Cup at the Lord's balcony still remains one of the most replayed moments in Indian history.

While he had his fair share of disappointments as Test captain that year, Dev was superb with both the bat and ball.

Kapil scored 500+ Test runs besides claiming 75 wickets - the most by an Indian bowler in a calendar year. His figures of 10-135 against the mighty West Indies in Ahmedabad still remain the best performance by a Test captain.

Kapil Dev record in World Cup

Kapil Dev made his World Cup debut during the 1979 event and went on to represent his country in three more events in 1983, 1987 and 1992.

While he led India to unprecedented glory in the summer of 1983, he suffered a devastating loss as captain four years later after the home side lost the semi-final to England.

Overall, Kapil scored 669 runs in 26 World Cup matches at an average of 37.16 besides claiming 28 wickets @ 31.85 apiece.

He scored India's maiden ODI 100 and claimed the country's maiden five-wicket-haul in this format of the game during the historic 1983 event.

Kapil's 175* still remains the highest score while batting at 5 or below, and at the time, it was the highest individual score in the format before Viv Richards broke it with an imperious 189* against England in 1984.

But it's his sensational running catch to dismiss the dangerous-looking Vivian Richards in the final and the image of him lifting the Trophy that will forever remain his biggest legacy at the showpiece event.

Kapil Dev's record vs Zimbabwe

The swashbuckling all-rounder featured in two Tests and nine ODIs against Zimbabwe.

In two Tests, he scored 76 runs @ 38 besides claiming four wickets @ 33.5. In nine ODIs, Kapil Dev racked up 233 runs, which includes his world-record breaking 175* off 138 deliveries in the 1983 World Cup. In addition to this, he has also claimed nine wickets @ 27.77.
