About Laver Cup 2024
The Laver Cup is an international men's team tennis championship played on indoor hard courts between Team Europe and Team World. Since 2017, the tournament has been hosted annually. The event typically takes place two weeks after the US Open, and the venue changes each year between cities in Europe and other parts of the world.
The Laver Cup received official ATP Tour approval in May 2019. The Laver Cup tournament matches are different from regular 3-set matches played on the ATP Tour in that if the match is tied at one set all, a 10-point "match tiebreak" is played instead of the deciding final set.
Laver Cup History
Laver Cup is named after the Australian tennis legend Rod Laver. Swiss Tennis legend Roger Federer played a key role in starting this tournament. In reality, Federer wanted to create a tennis tournament like Ryder Cup golf, which features the best golfers from the USA playing against the best golfers from Europe.
With that idea, the Laver Cup was founded. In the first edition of the event in 2017, players like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev, Marin Čilić, Dominic Thiem, and Tomáš Berdych represented Team Europe. While Sam Querrey, John Isner, Nick Kyrgios, Jack Sock, Denis Shapovalov, and Frances Tiafoe represented Team World.
Team Europe wins the first four editions of the Laver Cup. However, Team World won the back-to-back Laver Cup titles in 2022 and 2023.
Laver Cup: Format
Six European players compete against six players from the rest of the world in this competition. A tennis icon serves as the team captain for each team.
Nine singles matches and three doubles matches are played over the course of three days. Each match win is worth one point on Day 1, two points on Day 2, and three points on Day 3. The tournament winner is the first team to accumulate 13 points, so the winning team can only be determined on day three.
A player can play singles no more than two times. At least four of the team's six players compete in doubles matches. All matches begin with two sets, and if the score is tied after one set, a 10-point "match tiebreak" is played.
On day 3, a fifth match known as "The Decider" is played if both sides are tied with 12 points. In this match, one set is played like a regular set with scoring and a tiebreak.
An exhibition game is played after the trophy ceremony, if only one match must be played on Sunday. The Laver Cup in 2021 was the last event that required an exhibition match.
