The Players Championship History

The Players Championship was founded in 1974 by the then-PGA Commissioner Deane Beman. The inaugural event, which was known as the "Tournament Players Championship," was held at the Atlanta Country Club in Georgia and won by Jack Niklaus. Initially, it was held in September but shifted months and courses with no consistency.

But in 1976, the PGA Tour signed a multi-year deal with the Sawgrass Country Club, after which the event's schedule solidified in mid-March. More than 30 years later, in 2007, the FedEx Cup was introduced, which led to the restructuring of the PGA Tour Schedule and thus the Players Championship was moved to occur in May, annually. A decade later, in 2017, it came back to March.

The course of the event was Sawgrass Country Club till 1981 but was relocated the next year to the TPC at Sawgrass' Stadium Course. Further, in 1987, the event's name was altered to "The Players Championship." In the case of playoffs, the final three holes are used until someone wins in the sudden-death format.
