Purple Cap in WPL 2023
The Purple Cap is an award for the player who picks the most wickets in one season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is one award which has been continued since the inception of IPL in 2008 and the world-class bowlers compete with each other to bag the recognised award.
The inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL 2023) will also present the Purple Cap for the highest wicket-taker in the 22-match tournament.
There is no such official sponsor for the Purple Cap winner of WPL 2023. It took 15 seasons for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to get a sponsor for the Purple Cap in men's IPL, with Saudi Aramco becoming the first sponsor for Purple and Orange Cap in IPL 2022.
What is the Purple Cap in WPL?
The Purple Cap is the distinguished recognition for the player who picks up the most wickets at the conclusion of the tournament. The holders of the Purple Cap change as the new season progresses.
Which player gets a Purple Cap in WPL?
Every bowler aims to pick as many wickets they can in a season to boost their morale. Only the ones who can maintain consistency with their performance have the chance to be among the leading wicket-takers group. The Purple Cap award is for the player who has accounted for the most wickets in the whole season, including the knockout fixtures.
How many Indians have won the Purple Cap in WPL?
The WPL 2023 will end on March 26 and the Purple Cap winner will be awarded after the final game. An Indian player is expected to win the award but anything is possible as there are many talented overseas bowlers who can surprise in the tournament.
What are the benefits of being a Purple Cap holder in WPL?
The one with most wickets in any tournament will enhance its confidence level but to achieve such a feat in a lucrative league like WPL will only earn the player laurels around the globe.
Winning a Purple Cap in WPL can also help the bowler to push his case in her national side. Like we saw in the men's IPL, Harshal Patel, who won the Purple Cap in IPL 2021 as the first uncapped player, went on to represent India at international cricket.
Does wickets claimed in Super Over add to the Purple Cap race?
The Super Over is played only after both teams have the same score at the end of the 40-over game. However, the wickets picked by a bowler in the Super Over won't be counted in her season tally neither in the WPL career.
Who are the top contenders to win Purple Cap in WPL 2023?
A total of 63 players out of the 87 participating in the inaugural season of WPL 2023 are bowlers, including the all-rounders. Every team has a set of bowlers who can run through the opposition's batting line-up.
The likes of Renuka Singh Thakur, Deepti Sharma, Anjali Sarvani, Megan Schutt, Ellyse Perry, Jess Jonassen, Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp will be the top contenders to claim the Purple Cap in WPL 2023.
Rules for Purple Cap in WPL 2023
There are no standard guidelines noted by the tournament organsiers for the Purple Cap in WPL 2023. One can still have a look at the rules of IPL to win the Purple Cap.
Here are the unsaid rules which could be understood to determine the holder of Purple Cap
- The award is presented to the highest wicket-taker of the season.
- The bowler with most wickets after every game can wear the Purple Cap during her team's fielding period.
- If more than one bowler ends up with the same number of wickets then the best economy rate of those bowlers is used to determine the winner of Purple Cap of that season.
