Pat Cummins: I'm feeling alright, just have a tight quad. I was going to bowl, so that's not too horrible, but it wasn't too near. It feels fine. The lads described it as a jog (while fielding), I was happy with it, made an effort to be protective, and maybe I'll be available for Adelaide. Keeping my fingers crossed. You should expect to see big partnerships on Australian wickets. It was a wonderful effort all around because the batters did their jobs and the quicks performed well. Marnus is ridiculous and he has a big appetite for runs. Lyon is our team's most crucial bowler, he consistently gets wickets. The spinners had little to choose from, but he kept getting wickets.
Kraigg Brathwaite: Well, obviously I am disappointed because we lost. We gave away a few wickets easily but it was still a good effort from the batters and as a bowling unit. The first hour was crucial, I was thinking of batting normally and not going after the bowlers. The batters fought well but still need some improvement. We need to come up with a better fight for the next test. Getting a hundred was a special moment for me. We have to wait for the scan reports of Roach before we decide on our XI for the next test but we do have a backup ready.
Marnus Labuschagne is the Player of the Match: Look, yeah te ground is very similar to Brisbane. playing in bouncing wickets in Brisbane helps you in Perth. The ball was nipping around to begin with. It was a really nice spell from Alzarri. You could see me hopping and jumping. Probably lot to give to the batting coach. He gave a lot of batting practice in the nets, we hit a lot of balls in the next. That gives me the trust to play without fear.
Australia 598/4d (1st innings) West Indies 283 (1st innings) Australia 182/2d (2nd innings) West Indies 333 (2nd innings) Brathwaite 110(188) | Nathan Lyon 6/128
A brilliant performance from Australia across five days and they have been rewarded with a hard-fought victory. It's never easy to pick 20 wickets on good batting surfaces and the Aussies have done it without their talisman in the fourth innings. Smith and Marnus guided Australia to a mammoth first-innings total with their double tons. Australia in reply bowled out the Windies for a sub 300 score despite the efforts from Brathwaite and Chanderpaul. The Aussies decide to come out and bat again for a session and a half to set up a close to impossible target of 498. West Indies fought hard, Brathwaite scored his first fourth-innings century while Chanderpaul and Chase showed some resistance but Lyon kept grinding and came out as a winner with six wickets to his name.
Before the session began, West Indies were seven down and on the brink of a defeat. The Aussies were relaxed but Joseph and Chase managed to give them a mini-scare as they survived till the very last ball of the drinks break before Head broke through. Starc and Hazlewood looked weary and we could see some tense faces on the field. Australia's day-five record while bowling hasn't been great in recent times and with Cummins out, things were slipping out of their hands. Once Head got rid off Joseph, West Indies capitulated. Chase got to a half-century but departed soon. Lyon got two in two and took the Aussies over the line.
Nathan Lyon: Thank you, great way to start [the series]. To come here and do it in Perth...great to be back here. These guys are up there with some of the best players in the world. I was happy with Kraiggy wicket. He's a superstar batter and I had to be patient with the limited rough out there. When one [Cummins] goes down, the other has to take the workload. Cummins came out and said thanks to me but no... Marnus [Labuschagne] is incredible for Australia and Queensland for a number of years now. He wants us to call the Baby GOAT but we're not sure about that yet (laughs)."
Lyon finishes with 6 and Australia win by 164 runs!
110.5 Nathan Lyon to Kemar Roach, WICKET! And that is the match. Australia beats West Indies by 164 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. That went on straight with the arm and Roach was playing for the turn. Fizzes through the surface from a length around the off-stump channel. Straightens after pitching and Roach played the wrong line and has been castled here.
Kemar Roach b Nathan Lyon 0(1b 0x4 0x6)
Kemar Roach, RHB, comes to the crease
Chase departs! Lyon gets his fifth and Australia are just one wicket away from victory.
