Commentary

That brings us to the end of the opening Test and it ends in expected terms. Australia taking a 1-0 lead in the series and have also retained the Frank Worrell Trophy. Lots of cricket action lined up later today but for now, this is me (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty) bidding adieu also on behalf of my fellow commentator and good mate Probuddha. Ciao!

Pat Cummins (Australia captain): Good to get the job done in three days. It was a wicket where you always felt you were in the game. Trav set the game for us. Big fellow turned it on this week. He bowled quite brilliantly and took the game away from them in just one spell.

Kraigg Brathwaite (West indies captain): Yeah the bowlers bowled brilliantly to bowl Australia out for under 300 but we didn't bat well. It was good for the youngsters to get a feel of the No 1 bowling attack in the world. The whole experience will help them and they have to learn fast. Yeah it was great. Shamar is full of energy and has a bright future. He has a lot of skills and scored the most runs for us as well.

Travis Head (Player of the Match): No it was challenging at parts. I was lucky I had the experience. A great start to the summer. Yeah, nice to spend four to five days at home in this busy summer. Thanks!!!!

Josh Hazlewood: Nice to have a couple of days off. Nah!!! I have not probably bowled better. Well. I feel I did pretty well in the first part of the summer too but with not much results. Amazing!!! Amazing stuff from Shamar Joseph. A great start to the Test career to get Smithy off the first ball in your career. Well, Smithy looked relaxed about that chase. He does get a bit nervous with these 10-miniue changes, but all good Yes, it would be great to bowl with that pink ball at Gabba. Cheers!!!!

It turned out to be a rather one-sided contest in the end as Australia registered a 10-wicket victory in the first Test against West Indies at Adelaide to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. On Day 2, the West Indies bowlers tested Australia but couldn't quite recover from their dubious start to the second innings and it was always going to be a matter of few hours on Day 3 before Australia got it done. West Indies began Day 3 on 73/6, still 22 runs away from making Australia bat again.

They needed to come out with a positive frame of mind and it looked like Alzarri Joseph would go down with a fight. He struck some impressive shots against Mitchell Starc to get going but the left-arm speedster was quick to remove Joshua Da Silva with a well-directed short one before nicking off Alzarri with a good away swinger. Josh Hazlewood then came back to bag his fifer as he castled Gudakesh Motie with a beautiful indipper. West Indies were still one run behind Australia's score when Shamad Joseph and Kemar Roach joined hands.

Yet again they showed resilience and played some brilliant shots which were missing from the top-order batters. They didn't really throw their bat at everything but played some good cricketing shots, sharing a 26-run stand to make Australia bat again. It was an entertaining stand but the target of 26 was never going to challenge Australia. The openers Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja had a nice time out in the middle and struck some impressive shots as Australia went on to chase it down with all 10 wickets in hand. It was the Australian skipper Pat Cummins who won the toss on Day 1 and put West Indies in and it was a familiar sight which we have seen for so many years.

After some rearguard action by Kraogg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpal, West Indies completely lost their plot in the middle overs. Kirk McKenzie looked in fluent touch and went on to score a well-compiled half-century. He was the only bright spot in the innings as the West Indies were reduced to 133/9 before a brilliant partnership between Shamar Joseph and Kemar Roach took them to the score of 188 which atleast gave some hope to the West Indies bowlers. Yet again it was Shamar Joseph who came out all guns blazing with the ball and bagged a fifer in his very first outing.

He made the ball talk and troubled most of the Australian top-order and middle-order batters. Amidst the good work, it was Travis Head who turned it on for Australia with a counter-attacking century. He wasn't at his best but managed to find a way to score some important runs to give Australia a 95-run lead. Yet again, it was relentless bowling from the Australian fast bowlers as they reduced West Indies to 73/6 at the end of Day 2. They kept bowling in the perfect areas and kept accounting for the West Indies batters. Hazlewood went onto bag a fifer to set up a commanding 10-wicket win for Australia.

With that, Australia has won and taken a 1-0 lead in the two match series. They have also retained the Frank Worrell Trophy. They were thoroughly dominant all through the game and the result is a reflection of their hard work for two and a half days. The pitch wasn't as challenging the batters made it look but certainly stroke making wasn't too easy. In the end, Australia will walk off triumphant as they register an emphatic 10 wicket victory. A disciplined effort from the home team but West Indies also have some positives to take from this game.
