Finally England register a victory after five straight defeats. They have given themselves a realistic chance of getting through to the Champions Trophy 2025. They have one more match against Pakistan which will be a big one for both teams. Netherlands will now move to Bengaluru to face the red hot India. They still have a chance to finish in the top 7 but given the form, India has been in, it will be unlikely that Netherlands can effect an unlikely upset. The World Cup carnival continues as New Zealand will square off against Sri Lanka for a place in the final four. A loss for them could spell doom while a win could more or less guarantee them a place in the semi final. Like always, it was a pleasure bringing all the live coverage from this encounter. Till the next time, this is me (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty) signing off also on behalf of my fellow commentator and good mate Pradeep. Goodnight!
Jos Buttler (England captain): Yes we did. Absolute desperate for the win. We got off to a great start. Malan got us to a great start, we had a wobble in the middle and then Ben batted brilliantly and took charge. Delighted to have him in the team at that situation. I thought it was a really good score. Everyone said it was good for batting but I was confident with 340. The toss matters but you have to play good cricket as well maybe the pressure of World Cup cricket. Runs on the board teams have done well. The outfield could be wet as well and you can fancy the run chase as well. Chris Woakes is a class character. High-class swing bowling. Yeah it was a great start from us carrying on the momentum from the batting innings. It will be a huge game. We will go there, prepare well and up for a good challenge against Pakistan.
Scott Edwards (Netherlands captain): Obviously disappointing, we didn't start well with the ball, we let them get away from us but the bowlers did well to drag it back in the middle overs, but again we let it go towards the end, same old story with the bat. I think it was a pretty good wicket, we held them quite well until that 43rd over, may be we could've tried a few things but credit to them in the end, they batted well. It's obviously the balance that we got to find when chasing 340 score, you do have to get some of those runs in the powerplays, at the same time, you do have to keep wickets in hand and we will talk about it, have to figure out what we could've done better. As you said, we've been good in patches, similar today, we've got to do it for longer. England are a quality side, if you let them back in the game, they made the most of it as we saw today. It's going to be an amazing atmosphere there, boys are looking forward to it, we will talk about this game, what we could've done better and will start preparing for that.
Ben Stokes is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: Nothing more pleasing to get a victory to be honest, it's been a tough World Cup but nice to get back to winning ways. It was a typical Pune pitch, nice wicket to bat on, just that the back of the length had a bit of tennis ball bounce, just trying to take as deep as possible and cash in on at the end. Me and Woakes rebuild the partnership there, kept moving the scoreboard, if there was ever a pressure building up, just look at the scoreboard and get a move on. Woakes is very experienced cricketer, genuine all-rounder, having him down the order and with the skill that he has with the bat, obviously with the new ball, he's shown why he's one of the best all-rounders we have. No, don't leave anyone hanging.
England won by 160 runs
Ben Stokes 108(84) | Moeen Ali 3/42(8.2) Teja Nidamanuru 41*(34) | Bas de Leede 3/74(10)
It turned out to be a thoroughly convincing performance from the defending champions in the end, as they thrashed Netherlands by 160 runs to register their 2nd victory of the competition. After a brilliant start from Dawid Malan, England stuttered in the middle overs before Ben Stokes bailed them out of trouble with a scintillating century. With the ball, Chris Woakes and David Willey was lethal and the top order was blown away. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals but the partnership between Scott Edwards and Nidamanuru did give them some hope. However, they lost the five pretty quickly as all the batters wanted to hit the big shots and none of them came off.
The opening duo of Wesley Barresi and Max O'Dowd started very cautiously and was beaten on several occasions against the moving ball. Chris Woakes and David Willey bowled superbly with the new ball and bagged the wickets of O'Dowd and Colin Ackermann. The ball to Ackermann was a jaffa which just left the right-hander and took the outside edge. The pressure was well on truly on the Dutch and they employed the defensive approach. Only 23 runs were scored in the first powerplay and despite the scoring rate improving, it didn't really help as they were far behind in the first 10 overs.
Sybrand Engelbrecht shared an impressive stand together and played some good shots. It was Barresi who took the attack and tried to put some pressure back on the England bowlers. It was a miscommunication in the middle which brought about his departure while Engelbrecht also found the mid-off fielder as he tried to smash one over him. Bas de Leede looked a bit restless in the middle and ended up chopping one Adil Rashid wrong un onto his stumps.
The introduction of Teja Nidamanuru brought a fresh lease of life for the Dutch as he started taking the English bowlers on. He smashed a couple of lusty blows as Edwards also joined in the act. The fifty-run partnership came up pretty quickly but they didn't had enough firepower towards the end. Edwards was dismissed in an attempt to clear the mid-off fielder and from there it was Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid who wiped off the tail in a matter of minutes. Both the spinners took three wickets apiece while David Willey also chipped in with a couple.
Netherlands have surrendered very meekly. They have lost by 160 runs and England get the points and also some advantage they were seeking on net run rate. England lost six while batting until the Stokes hundred which got them to a massive score of 339 and it was always going to be a massive task for the Dutch to make a match of this. They were in the game when Scott Edwards and Teja Nidamanuru was going well but all of a sudden, they fell apart like a pack of cards, losing the last five wickets for just 16 runs.
37.2 Moeen Ali to Paul van Meekeren, OUT! AND THAT IS THAT! STUMPED! England finally, finally notch up their second win and still cling on as far as qualifying for the Champions Trophy goes. Van Meekeren dances down the track, Moeen spots and pulls the length back and bowls it slightly wide of off-stump, van Meekeren misses and doesn't bother getting back as Buttler waits and then flicks the bails off.
Paul van Meekeren st Jos Buttler b Moeen Ali 4 (3b, 1x4, 0x6)
37.1 Moeen Ali to Teja Nidamanuru, short and speared in on the middle and leg. Nidamanuru gets inside the line and works it past backward square-leg for one.
That's the 37th over done and dusted and Netherlands just on the verge of yet another defeat in the tournament. They have played well in patches but overall, it hasn't been that great from them. How will Nidamanuru approach the situation here?
