Gus Atkinson made his domestic debut for Surrey against Essex in the Bob Willis Trophy 2020. He picked up three wickets across the two innings as Surrey lost to Essex by a huge margin of 169 runs.
Soon after, he made his T20 debut for Surrey against Sussex in the Vitality Blast 2020. He picked the wicket of skipper Luke Wright, but the match ended with no result due to rain.

In the second innings, Atkinson picked up a five-wicket haul, and he registered five-wicket hauls in both the innings on Test debut. He finished the match with figures of 12/106, which is the third-best match figures on Test debut by an Englishman (12/106).
He was awarded the ‘Player Of The Match,’ but the spotlight was on one of the greatest pacers in Test history James Anderson, who had well and truly passed on his reigns to the young pace sensation Gus Atkinson.
