So that's that for this contest. The first white-ball international of 2023 was quite the thriller and if this is anything to go by, we should be in for a nice rollercoaster ride ahead. A happy captain and as he rightfully said, the youngsters bailed the hosts out today. That's a big positive for India as they move ahead and look to grow as a T20 outfit. He is fit and fine too which is a big relief from an Indian perspective. Wins like these are bound to add a spring into the step of the Indian team and they will look to wrap up the series in Pune in a couple of days' time. From Sri Lanka's point of view, they will look to draw inspiration from their victory at that venue seven years ago, one of only two instances where they've beaten India in India in a T20I contest. Work to do for them across departments, but a lot of positives to take from this one too.

Hardik Pandya (Indian captain): (Getting used to be called India captain) Now yes, definitely. (Injury) It's just cramps. I think I have a tendency to scare people. It's easy. If I'm smiling, there's nothing to worry. Had a rough night, and wasn't feeling too well. So, maybe the body didn't have enough fluids. (Not bowling the last over himself) It's okay. I want to put this team into difficult situations because that will help us in big games. Bilaterals is something we are good at. I'm okay with losing a few games here and there but the main aim is to be prepared for the big moments. (Performance of Shivam Mavi) To be honest, the young ones got us in a situation to win the game. I've seen him (Mavi) in the IPL. I told him to back his strengths. It's okay if you get hit. I'm backing you all the way. (Taking the new ball) If the same situation is there, then yes. I've been working on my swing bowling ever since returning from injury, even in the IPL. I've been bowling with the new ball and it allows me to challenge the batter, with more on offer. If I can get a wicket here and there, it helps me rotate my bowlers around more later in the game too. I've learned how to swing it and I like bowling with the new ball.

Deepak Hooda is the Player of the Match for his game-changing unbeaten 41. Here's what he has to say: I just try to practice according to each batting number and keep my mind ready to bat at any number and in any situation. We were just conversing that it's a matter of two or three hits and we will get to that 160-mark with those. I love the game and I want to contribute in every way possibly. I don't practice (hitting sixes) but I am aware of what shots to play when.

Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lankan captain): It was really disappointing. I personally believe that we should have won. That's a game we should have won, especially on this ground. (Bowling plans with the spinners) It's the combinations. I look at matchups and that's the key. That's why we were able to restrict them to 162. (Performance of the top order) It's the first game of the series. They're a good bunch of players, these youngsters. They will come good in the next game.

Shivam Mavi: The leg was slipping a bit (at the start) with some dents around the landing area. So, I just adjusted and bowled from slightly wider. (How it feels to make his debut for India) Honestly, I've been waiting for 6 years, ever since the U19 World Cup. There were a few injuries along the way. I've had to work hard to get till here. It was a dream to play for my country and when Hardik bhai gave me the cap, it was a special feeling. (Nerves at the start?) When you've played in the IPL, the nervousness is a lot less here. Hardik bhai kept talking to me throughout. He was telling me it's okay even when the boundary is scored. I was sticking to my guns, looking for wickets, and bringing the stumps into play. (Favorite wicket) The first one.

Phew! We knew it was going to be a close one and while New Year's Eve was a good three evenings ago, we witnessed a cracking atmosphere of some kind today. India didn't have enough on the board and even the 162 they ended with was down to Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel's late blitz. But with dew not setting in much and the pitch showing some tackiness, it was game on.

Hardik Pandya took the new ball himself and got it to hoop around before debutant Shivam Mavi landed a double-whammy in the powerplay. Far too many dots in the powerplay, despite a decent start from Kusal Mendis, pegged the Sri Lankans back as the asking rate mounted on them. The moment of the match came from Ishan Kishan though as the wicket-keeper covered ridiculous ground to pull off a sensational catch in the deep to send Charith Asalanka packing.

India kept chipping away at the wickets but the visitors stormed back with a fine counter-attack. Wanindu Hasaranga used the pace of Umran Malik before tearing into Yuzvendra Chahal, who looked off color again. It was Mavi who returned to break the game wide open again as he prized out Hasaranga's wicket but yet again, it was skipper Dasun Shanaka who stood tall under pressure.

He was timing it like a million dollars and kept his side afloat with the asking rate. Once Umran removed him with one clocked at 155 kph though, India were back in front...only for Chamika Karunaratne to then pick out the fence and put the hosts under pressure again.

13 runs were needed off the final over and once Karunaratne got the strike and cleared the fence once, it seemed like he was going to take his side home. However, a run out and some incredible composure shown by Axar Patel ensured that he prevailed even as a disgruntled Karunaratne failed to take his team past the finish line by the barest of margins. Quite a start to the year, eh? Stay tuned for the presentation...

Oh agony for Karunaratne! He is absolutely livid with himself but chin up good man, you gave it everything. He is so so despondent as he walks back even as he receives a round of applause from the Lankan dugout and head coach Chris Silverwood. What a contest we've witnessed though - India prevail by a mere 2 runs!

19.6 Axar Patel to Chamika Karunaratne, INDIA CLINCH A THRILLER AT THE WANKHEDE! Darted in full on middle and leg, there for Karunaratne to swing for the fences. He didn't get the desired connection on it though and could only hack it down to deep mid-wicket. Madushanka turns back but it's of no use - Karunaratne hadn't moved from the non-striker's end and Kishan dislodges the bails to bring the curtains down. It's a disappointing walk back for him into the dressing room and he's evidently still fuming. Not sure he's shaken hands with any of the Indian players either. That's something to focus on after the game perhaps. For now, India win a nail-biter by 2 runs!
