India soar to the second place with a demolishing job over Sri Lanka. They have to face the mighty Aussies next which would a potential knockout for them (in most likelihood). Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have had a dismal campaign and they have the opportunity to finish it on a high when they go up against the Kiwis next in a couple of days time. Harmanpreet Kaur (India Women captain): Doing well by God's grace (smiles). Today all the boxes were ticked. Specially our fielding, we held on to all the catches. We have spoken a lot about our fielding. We did discuss about how much we need to set if we bat first, or how much we would like to chase. But these pitches are really tricky. We thought of 160, happy to get 170. We are that stage that we have to think about winning and also the net run-rate, we have to play good cricket (in the next match vs Australia). Very happy for our bowlers, they are really doing well and giving us wickets. Whenever the team does well, I feel happy. This is a day to enjoy our success.
Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka Women captain): We struggled even in the bowling, we dropped a few catches. The bowlers did not bowl the right line and lengths, the batters specially the top-3 including myself did not do well. We will have to go back to the white board and rethink. Yeah unfortunately, the first loss hurt us, we should have chased that, it was a low-scoring match. It was important to pick ourselves up but we did not manage to do so. We will go back and rethink, put up a good performance in our last game against New Zeland.
Harmanpreet Kaur (Player of the Match for her 52* (27)): We wanted to build the momentum. Credit goes to Mandhana and Shafali for the start. They were calculative. Jemi and I came with two wickets down, we got going and then just went with the flow. It was one of those days, I was in my zone and wanted to be there for the team and hit the ones which were in my arc. The credit goes to the team for playing so positively. These wickets are not very true for batting. You have to be there, rotate the strike. You can't keep swinging the bat. You need to trust yourself, be there for a long time. That's what we did - we didn't throw our wickets and really happy with the way we played.
India register their biggest win in T20 WC history by a whopping margin of 82 runs and decimate Sri Lanka in an almost flawless performance. By doing so, they also have done wonders to their net run-rate and have galloped to the second position in Group A in the points table.
They set up a huge total of 173 for Sri Lanka to chase and to be honest it was all India in the second innings. All of it started in the first over itself when Renuka struck once again in the first over to remove Gunaratne but what was important in that dismissal was the breathtaking catch taken by substitute fielder Radha Yadav running back in the off-side. That was an absolute statement that India meant business and they did not look back from there.
Shreyanka came in from the other end and dismissed the biggest name in Sri Lankan women's cricket, Chamari Athapaththu with a beautiful off-break delivery and that sealed their fate. Another one fell in the next over to Renuka and soon Sri Lanka were 6/3.
Dilhari and Sanjeewani tried to steady the ship for a bit but it was too much work for them to do. Asha Sobhana removed Sanjeewani in the 8th over and then the wickets just kept tumbling.
The leg spinner went on to take 2 more wickets and ended up with identical figures as that of Arundhati Reddy who was introduced late into the attack but continued her wicket-taking form. Amidst all this were some really spectacular catches which, for me, were the highlights of the day. Deepti finished off with the final wicket and completed a dominant victory for India who outplayed Sri Lanka in every facet of the game.
19.5 Deepti Sharma to Udeshika Prabodhani, OUT! CAUGHT! India win and they register another full 10. Sri Lanka have been bowled out for 90, almost half the target and the NRR boost to India's semi-finals hopes is supreme. Prabodhani mis-hits the tossed up ball, Mandhana runs back, catches, juggles and catches again to seal the big win. Udeshika Prabodhani c Smriti Mandhana b Deepti Sharma 9 (17b, 0x4, 0x6, 25m)
19.4 Deepti Sharma to Inoka Ranaweera, full outside off, crunches it to mid-off and Renuka gets a good throw in to Richa who clips the bails off. The batter is safe though.
