So that concludes our coverage of this rain-affected contest. We thank you dearly for your patience throughout and we hope you enjoyed our coverage. More SA20 action coming up though as Durban's Super Giants face Pretoria Capitals at Kingsmead tomorrow so do join us for our coverage of that and plenty more right here on Sportskeeda. For the moment, this is the troika of Pragadeesh, Rajarshi and Sooryanarayanan calling it a night. Toodles!
A big win for the Joburg Super Kings and they walk away with a bonus point too. Not many would have envisioned that when they were asked to chase 98. But not many envisioned a result either given the long delay we had. Sport and fate work in funny ways, eh?
The Super Kings' campaign is still alive but so is that of MI Cape Town although they really need a lot of things to fall into place now. Two wins against the Pretoria Capitals will keep them in the hunt although they'd want to do it with a bonus point themselves.
Joburg Super Kings skipper Faf du Plessis is the Player of the Match for his stunning unbeaten half-century. Here's what he has to say: (Thoughts when it started to rain?) The other day in Pretoria I was settling in and it rained. At one stage it felt like the season was slipping away. Things haven't really fallen our way so very, very happy to have got a game. (On the bowling in the first six overs) Brilliantly (bowled). We saw there was a bit of extra bounce in the wicket so we hit those lengths well. We felt if we hit those good lengths there was enough for the bowlers. Obviously changed with the rain delay. We knew Immi (Tahir) was going to bowl one - we were limited with our options so a tough over to bowl for David Wiese. Takes a brave man to get a lap first ball for six (on Leus du Plooy) but well played. His game plan is suited for these conditions. He plays the ball well square and uses his feet. Tonight the change was for the left-right combination. We thought of taking that positive option and that worked pretty well. The tricky part with not having played cricket for a while is you're looking for that rhythm. I am a big rhythm player. It was only two days before - the previous game - where I was starting to feel a bit better. It took me a little bit longer than I would have liked. The previous game I almost felt that come back. Was frustrated with that as well when the rain came. (Morale booster?) 100 per cent - this is huge, especially the way we won with the bonus point. Great that we're still fighting and not going anywhere.
Kieron Pollard (MI Cape Town captain): Sometimes you don't have any control and these things happens. We had two overs to bat and these things happen. We don't have any control on it. Runs on the board is important and to contain them in the powerplay for two overs. The boundaries are small and credit to the batters because after 3-4 overs, we were out of the game. They don't have much time to think about it. Well played to Joburg Super Kings. What must change is to have a W at the end of the game. Anyway, we have to regroup because in a couple of days, we are facing Pretoria Capitals
Match Summary: Joburg Super Kings beat MI Cape Town by 10 wickets (DLS) and pocket a bonus point!
Faf du Plessis 50* (20) | Imran Tahir 2/13 (1) Kieron Pollard 33* (14) | Ryan Rickelton 23 (15)
A start. A long stop. A resumption. Further delays with one team hinging on the weather to come to their rescue. And eventually, the other takes it with a bonus point. This was quite a game alright!
A total of 13.4 overs were sent down but we've witnessed a theatrical contest at Newlands. Joburg Super Kings had a massive task on hand to gun down 98 in 8 overs but the way they came out swinging for the bleachers, they seemed to have the bonus point equation in mind all along. Leus du Plooy was shored up the order instead of Reeza Hendricks and he showed just why, beginning the chase with consecutive sixes as Nuwan Thushara was put under the pump.
Du Plooy continued his scintillating run of form but this equation seemed to bring the best out of Faf du Plessis too as he unleashed his vintage best to strike form at the perfect time. There was a drizzle again but the umpires were happy to continue playing. Once the Super Kings whipped up 57 off the first three overs though, the result was a foregone conclusion.
MI Cape Town skipper Kieron Pollard played his mind games and tried delaying proceedings regularly - something that du Plessis sure didn't take to very kindly. Sam Curran even shoved a wide over the batter's head to try and drag things to allow the heavens to open up. But it definitely didn't tell on du Plessis' batting as he romped to a quickfire half-century that saw the Super Kings home in super quick time, pocketing that crucial bonus point along the way. It was an exhibition of six-hitting that was a sight to behold and it surely ought to boost the confidence of the Men in Yellow. Stick around as we hear from the captains...
It was Pollard who set this game up but it's a wide off his own bowling that brings this game to a close. Goodness me what a contest we've had! Sheer theatrical drama but Joburg Super Kings romp home by 10 wickets (DLS) with a bonus point!
5.5 Kieron Pollard to Leus du Plooy, WIDE! GAME.SET.MATCH! Joburg Super Kings reign supreme with a bonus point. A frustrated Pollard slants this wide of off-stump and it goes away from the blue line
Half-century for Faf du Plessis off just 20 deliveries! Welcome back skipper is what Joburg Super Kings fans will be saying. He badly needed this knock alright. And the scores are level too!
5.4 Kieron Pollard to Faf du Plessis, back of a length angling in, du Plessis helps it to deep backward square leg to bring up his half-century
5.3 Kieron Pollard to Faf du Plessis, dug it short, du Plessis ducks under it
