Donovan Ferreira

Born on July 21, 1998, in Pretoria, South Africa, Donovan Ferreira is a wicketkeeper-batter who represents South Africa in international cricket and Johannesburg Super Kings in the SA20. Ferreira is a clean ball striker who has a penchant for clearing the ropes when he gets going and has the added advantage of cementing his place in the team as a wicketkeeper-batter.

Though he has only played a couple of T20Is for South Africa, the 26-year-old Pretorian has the potential to break the barriers and find himself in the squad for a long run shortly, thanks to his impressive strike rate in the shortest format.

Donovan Ferreira has had a promising start to his career, featuring in franchise leagues for his batting exploits. He would be eyeing to convert his start to a middle-order maverick and can chip in with his part-time off-break.

Donovan Ferreira Domestic Career

Donovan Ferreira made his domestic debut for the Northerns against Free State in the Africa T20 Cup on September 14, 2018. He made a breezy 22 off 17 balls as the Northerns won by a margin of 14 runs.

Ferreira made his List-A debut for Northerns against Western Province in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge on October 19, 2019. He had a forgettable debut as Thando Ntini dismissed him for a golden duck.

The Pretorian made his first-class (FC) debut for Easterns against Free State in the CSA Three-Day Provincial Cup on February 22, 2021. Though he has played a few matches in List-A and FC cricket and owns a good record, Ferreira has found his groove in the shortest format of the game and boasts a terrific record as a middle-order batter.

Ferreira jumped into the spotlight in the very second match of the inaugural edition of the SA20 2023. In the Johannesburg Super Kings’ (JSK) maiden appearance in the newly-found league, he smashed his way to announce himself as he scored an unbeaten 82 off just 40 balls, his personal best in T20s, against the Durban Super Giants (DSG).

He came in at 99/5 with the team struggling to get going after their skipper Faf du Plessis was dismissed, but Ferreira forged an 87-run partnership with West Indian all-rounder Romario Shepherd as JSK won their inaugural game by a margin of 16 runs. He was adjudged the ‘Player Of The Match’ not only for topping JSK’s batting chart but also for picking up the crucial wicket of DSG skipper Quinton de Kock.

Ferreira smashed the second-fastest half-century against Pretoria Capitals (PC) in SA20 2024. After having a winless streak, he ensured that he churned out the Super Kings from a precarious situation once again much akin to the inaugural match of JSK in the first edition of the league.

In The Hundred 2024, the 26-year-old wicketkeeper played a vital knock of 30 off 23 balls coming in at number 6, to ensure that the Invincibles continued their winning momentum. Ferreira was part of the victorious Oval Invincibles squad that defended their title in The Hundred 2024.

Donovan Ferreira IPL Career

Post his SA20 exploits for JSK, Donovan Ferreira landed an IPL contract with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for INR 50 lakhs in the IPL 2023 auction. Though he did not get to feature in that season, he made his debut against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024. He has only featured in a couple of games and would be looking to set the mega tournament on fire in the coming seasons.

Donovan Ferreira made his much-awaited T20I debut for South Africa against Australia in Durban on September 03, 2023. He impressed on his maiden international appearance for the Proteas as he smashed 48 off just 21 balls coming in as a finisher at no. 6, including five maximums, before being run out by a direct hit from Josh Inglis.

Ferreira last played a T20I in India’s tour of South Africa in December 2023, where he was bamboozled for 12 runs by chinaman Kuldeep Yadav. With talent on the back, he would be hoping to get more opportunities in the format to represent the African nation.
