Absolute madness as New Zealand win it on the last ball with a single sneaked in via bye with a dive from Williamson who just got in.
After a rain affected day, they were put in to bat and had to chase 257 runs in 53 overs as both the first 2 sessions were washed out today. It seemed impossible but they did on the the last ball.
Williamson stayed on till the end and his 121 run innings has won the game for the Kiwis, he was dropped on 33 by Dickwella. His partnership alongside Mitchell was crucial today after Latham got out early in the session.
Sr Lanka started the game with the bat in hand and they would have been confident with 355 on board. Half centuries from Kusal Mendis and Karunaratne got them there, with notable contributions from Mathews, de Silva and Chandimal. Tim Southee got his 14th 5-wicket hall and Matt Henry helped him with a 4-fer.
New Zealand got a lead of 18 runs after that in the second innings, as Daryl Mitchell scored a century and Matt Henry played a brilliant 72 run cameo to rescue them and get them the lead. Latham got a half century as well. Fernando got a 4-fer while Kumara got a 3-fer.
In the third innings, the Kiwis bundles out the Lankans for 302, Angelo Matthews scored a century after a long time with Chandimal and de Silva getting scores in the 40s. Tickner with a 4-fer, Henry with 3 wickets and Southee with 2 broke their top order.
With 285 runs required and a whole day to play, New Zealand would have been confident to win this game. Then rain came in and played spoilsport this morning. Just 53 overs left in the game and the game to be played in one session they came out to bat. They chased it from there at the last ball, with Williamson guiding them through.
A dropped catch of Williamson, many misfields that cost them runs. brilliant running between the wickets from the Kiwis and a few monstrous sixes from Mitchell. This is how they chased down this impossible target.
HE HAS WON IT WITH A DIVE. WHAT A BRILLIANT FINISH TO THIS TEST.

69.6 Asitha Fernando to Kane Williamson, WHAT HAPPENED HERE! WHAT JUST HAPPENED HERE? NEW ZEALAND WIN! NEW ZEALAND EARN A MAGNIFICENT VICTORY! AFTER SHEER DRAMA, NEW ZEALAND WIN A CLIFFHANGER BUT THE SRI LANKAN HOPES OF STAYING ALIVE IN THE WORLD TEST CHAMPIONSHIP BLOW UP IN SMOKE! Short over off-and-middle. Williamson went for the pull shot by shuffling across to off. He missed it but without wasting any further time, decided to scamper through for a single. Wagner was home when Dickwella's throw missed the stumps at the striker's end. But then, Asitha collected it to throw down the stumps at the non-striker's end! Williamson put in the dive as well and the decision was left to the third umpire to decide the fate of the game! The replays showed then, that Williamson just made it back in with that dive when the stumps were broken and bails dislodged! With that, a remarkable victory was achieved by 2 wickets! This result means that the teams for the World Test Championship Final have been decided. India will take on Australia at The Oval from June 7, 2023!
How is that not a wide, a crucial decision from the umpire. 1 required off 1.
69.5 Asitha Fernando to Kane Williamson, short over off-stump on this occasion. Williamson bends low and tries to shovel it over square-leg but it is too high for him to get bat on ball. However, the umpire reckons that it is one bouncer for the over and not a wide! The drama continues here at the Hagley Oval!
1 run required now. What a shot, he placed it so well and timed it to perfection.
69.4 Asitha Fernando to Kane Williamson, FOUR RUNS! KANE WILLIAMSON GETS FOUR RUNS! THAT IS AN EXCELLENT SHOT UNDER THE MOST EXTREME PRESSURE! Full outside off-stump. Williamson created some room this time and hit it square of the wicket off the front foot, in between deep point and wide third man for a boundary and set the home crowd into a frenzy! Only 1 run to get now off 2 balls!
