Neil Wagner: A Brief Biography

Neil Wagner Biography

Neil Wagner was born in Pretoria, Transvaal South Africa on March 13, 1986. He is a professional cricketer who plays for New Zealand. Wagner is a left-arm medium pace bowler, he has the ability to swing the ball in both directions and has a few tricks up his sleeve with reverse swings which he developed later on his career and applying the short ball technique to good use.

Background

Wagner started his cricketing career playing in the first team of Afrikaans High School. After touring Zimbabwe and Bangladesh with Academy sides, he finally moved to Otago in 2009 aiming to set his cricketing career there.

Debut

Wagner made his Test debut against West Indies in July 2012, he was able to pick a single wicket in the first innings but unfortunately couldn't manage any in the second.

Rise to Glory

Wagner had a shaky start in his debut and the game after that against South Africa was not a dream one too.

However, he had a phenomenal beginning to 2013, taking 19 wickets in 5 Tests against England.

This performance was the sole reason of his establishment in the New Zealand test side.

Wagner showed great promise in late 2015 against Sri Lanka and later produced a 7 wicket haul against Australia including 6 wickets in the first innings and became a prominent member of the team.

In 2016, New Zealand toured Zimbabwe and Wagner proved to be a great threat to them, taking a total of 11 wickets in two tests including a five wicket haul in the first test match he won the man of the series award.

Club Career

Wagner started off his domestic cricket with the Northerns in 2006-07 , he also had a noticeable two four wicket hauls with the side.

In 2008 he went down to join Otago a first class New Zealand team, he had a great opening season taking 21 wickets and continued to better his record in the coming years, leading the wicket’s chart in the Plunket Shield in 2010-11 and snowballing with 46 wickets in the next season.

Wagner still continues to play for Otago and is a regular in the New Zealand test side. His next challenge being getting into the short formats of the game on the international level.
