Commentary

That's that from this contest as the weekend draws to a close. The CPL breaks for a day and Tuesday evening (Wednesday morning in the subcontinent) will see the St Lucia Kings face off against the Trinbago Knight Riders in Gros Islet. The smiles are back for the Falcons. And Chris Green can be a happy man. Two more points and they've now risen to third on the table although they've played three extra games in comparison to the St Lucia Kings. The Patriots really need a miracle now - they've just not had the kind of home run they would have envisioned prior to the start of the tournament but as they hit the road, they will know that a string of wins are all that can put them back on track. Their head coach, Malolan Rangarajan, is also part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. Can he inspire his team to a turnaround similar to what that franchise achieved in the IPL this year?

Chris Green (Antigua and Barbuda Falcons captain): (Lessons from the last few games) I learnt that we like winning in the last over. Got to credit this group and the vibe throughout. We're having a lot of fun as a playing group on and off the field. When you do that you set yourself up to win after a tough run at home. You look at our last game, Shamar Springer and Roshon Primus got us over the line when the odds were against us. Today, we tested our depth - we saw how that wicket played, it was conducive to spin. We were tempted to play five spinners but we did well to restrict them. Fabs and I have had a lot of conversations on where he's best suited. I think he's one of the best finishers in the world. He's a great player, he likes to stand up in the big moments with bat and ball. We've got a lot of options and we're just trying to find out who's the best option for the best moment. (On countering Hasaranga) We knew he was going to be their danger player along with the two finger-spinners. But Roshon Primus did well with those two sweep shots.

Andre Fletcher (St Kitts & Nevis Patriots captain): It was a difficult wicket to start with. They pegged us back early but the way Hasaranga and Mikyle Louis played, took us back to a fighting total. (On 153) We all said that it was a good total. My concern was the powerplay. They had a good powerplay. We got our opportunities with wickets. Still searching for answers but I must say the guys fought hard. (On Louis) We all know that he can bat. That's why he's in the West Indies. Just told him to go and play with confidence, step onto the front foot. He showed that he can play any situation and to be honest, I'm so happy for him. I must say thanks (to the crowd). They've supported us. We've disappointed them, it's hard but I'd like to apologize to them. It's sad but all is not lost.

Imad Wasim (Player of the Match): These wickets suit me. My number is really crucial. Batting at number 4 or 5, you can take the game deep. Today I batted number 8 because of an injury. It was a great toss to win. Hasaranga bowled really well, otherwise the match would have been over in 16 or 17 overs.. Bowling under pressure, you need to know what the wickets is demanding. 153 was a good total. The clarity of the role is important. One of us try to take wicket early in the innings or middle overs, put the team under pressure. The good thing about T20, don't try to do much, just stick to the basics and things will happen.

Phew! A huff and a puff. After an initial period of dominance and a proper slump thereafter, the Falcons have held on for dear life to pocket their second win of CPL 2024. It was never going to be an easy chase on a turning deck with Mikyle Louis' 63 giving the Patriots a competitive score to work with. Given how the chase unfolded, it certainly seemed par at one point.

Of course, that wasn't how it seemed the way Brandon King and Justin Greaves tore into the bowlers in the powerplay and made the most of a hard new ball. Having raced off the traps to notch up 50 inside the first four overs, the Falcons were surging ahead to leave the bowlers clueless. Anrich Nortje yorked King to pin him in front and then, Wanindu Hasaranga bamboozled Greaves with a peach of a googly.

That's where the game swung as Hasaranga's masterful spell left the batters with no idea as to how to play him. The spinners applied the squeeze with Veerasammy Permaul and Ashmead Nedd duly doing their bit. A couple of tame dismissals suddenly saw the Falcons sink to 110/7 but when all hope seemed lost, Roshon Primus unleashed some fine sweeps off Hasaranga to transfer some pressure back.

Imad Wasim then used all his experience and composure to the fullest, going after Nortje to bring the asking rate within control. Thereafter, Dominic Drakes was superb, as was Nortje who nabbed Primus in the 19th over but with Fabian Allen coming out to bat as late as number 10, there was still enough ammunition to get the job done. And so he did, carting Drakes in the last over for a six and a four before sneaking in the winning run with two deliveries to spare. A hard fought win for the Falcons - one that surely ought to get more belief going within the camp!
