Commentary

Match drawn; Karnataka pocket three points, Tamil Nadu take one.

They were given a real scare but Karnataka eventually managed to eke out three points on first innings lead against Tamil Nadu in what was an epic at Chepauk. Baba Indrajith's 98 and Vijay Shankar's 60 took a loss out of the equation for the hosts as they threatened to pull off the chase. It pushed Karnataka on the defensive as they looked to draw the match instead although a couple of quick wickets meant that Tamil Nadu needed 20 runs off the last over of the day. It was a stalemate in the end as they finished on 338/8. Karnataka now have 24 points to their kitty while Tamil Nadu have 22, with Gujarat catching up with 19 points in third position in Group C.

Tea on Day 4 - Tamil Nadu 212/5, need 143 more runs to win.

A slow-paced session with Tamil Nadu losing two more wickets and as things stand, they need to 'Bazball' their way to a win with 143 more runs needed in the final session. Baba Indrajith continues to remain unflappable on 48 although M Mohammed was shored up the order as a pinch-hitter. He began positively but perished for a 13-ball 15 and out in the middle with Indrajith is the experienced Vijay Shankar (5*). Five more wickets are what Karnataka need to wrap up a win - which way will this finish?

Lunch on Day 4 - Tamil Nadu 150/3, require 205 more runs to win.

It seems like we have a game on hand at Chepauk. Tamil Nadu have scored at a good clip while not just looking to survive thanks to Pradosh Ranjan Paul's 74 and Vimal Khumar's dogged 31. Paul's wicket not long before Lunch has just allowed Karnataka to breathe easy, however, with Vijaykumar Vyshak delivering a timely blow yet again. Baba Indrajith (23*) and Boopathi Vaishna Kumar (5*) are the incumbent batters and a big partnership between them ought to send some nerves jangling in the visitors' ranks.

Stumps on Day 3 - Tamil Nadu 36/1, require 319 more runs to win.

S Ajith Ram's five-wicket haul has brought this marquee contest at Chepauk to life although Vijaykumar Vyshak frustrated the hosts, first with an unbeaten 22-run cameo and then with the big wicket of Narayan Jagadeesan. Karnataka's spinners are bound to have a massive say on the last day and chasing down this target won't be easy by any stretch for Tamil Nadu. But there is a chance and the hosts will want to make the most of it. Can Vimal Khumar (16*) and Pradosh Ranjan Paul (10*) show the way and script a famous win?

Tea on Day 3 - Karnataka 110/6, lead Tamil Nadu by 325 runs in the 2nd innings.

Batting certainly hasn't gotten any easier as this game has progressed but Karnataka continue to breathe easy thanks to that mammoth first innings lead they pocketed. S Ajith Ram has bagged three wickets so far to land dents aplenty into the visitors' innings with Devdutt Padikkal (36) and Hardik Raj (20) failing to convert their starts. Can Tamil Nadu manage to keep the target under 350?

Lunch on Day 3 - Karnataka 39/2, lead Tamil Nadu by 254 runs in the 1st innings.

Vijaykumar Vyshak finished with 4/26 as Karnataka routed Tamil Nadu for 151 in their first innings in Chennai. Baba Indrajith top scored with 48 and it summed up a disappointing batting effort for the hosts, with the visitors pocketing a massive lead of 215. Karnataka opted against enforcing the follow-on, however, and while openers Ravikumar Samarth (2) and Mayank Agarwal (11) departed, Devdutt Padikkal (18*) will aim to build on his mammoth first innings total and take the contest out of Tamil Nadu's reach for good.

Stumps on Day 2 - Tamil Nadu 129/7, trail Karnataka by 237 runs in the 1st innings.

Karnataka continue to dominate proceedings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium with hosts Tamil Nadu left reeling on 129/7. Wickets tumbled around Baba Indrajith, who continues to remain unbeaten on 35 as Karnataka's bowlers continued to hunt the hosts down as a pack. With the deficit still reading 237, chances of Tamil Nadu being asked to follow-on are fairly high and that will be right on top of Karnataka's agenda tomorrow morning.

Tea on Day 2 - Tamil Nadu 80/4, trail Karnataka by 286 runs in the 1st innings.

After a solid opening partnership of 51, Tamil Nadu lost their way as Karnataka's bowlers snagged four wickets to leave the hosts on the backfoot. Narayan Jagadeesan (40) couldn't convert his start into a big one this time around with Shashi Kumar bagging a couple of wickets for Karnataka. Vijaykumar Vyshak then removed S Lokeshwar right at the stroke of Tea and the hosts now need a massive partnership to put things back on track. Can the likes of Vijay Shankar and M Mohammed assist Baba Indrajith (11*) in this regard?

Lunch on Day 2 - Tamil Nadu 1/0, trail Karnataka by 365 runs in the 1st innings.

Karnataka failed to capitalize on their strong foothold on the contest and were bowled out for 366 in their first innings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Devdutt Padikkal failed to add to his overnight score of 151 and while Hardik Raj (51) and Sharath Srinivas (45) made pivotal contributions, the wheels came off in the second half of the morning session on Day 2. S Ajith Ram finished with four wickets and the onus is now on the Tamil Nadu openers to lay a stable platform with the bat.

Stumps on Day 1 - Karnataka 288/5 in the 1st innings.

Tamil Nadu bounced back post Tea with three quick strikes to just leave Karnataka wobbling a bit. But Devdutt Padikkal (151*) found an able ally in teenage all-rounder Hardik Raj (35*) to ensure that the visitors eventually ended the day in a healthy position. The spinners accounted for all five wickets to have fallen today and Tamil Nadu will look to trigger a collapse on the second morning before their batters take over. Can Karnataka post 400?
