Devdutt Padikkal has been making huge waves in the Karnataka cricket circuit and is reckoned to be the next big thing. The Edapal-born cricketer is a left-handed batsman and also bowls serviceable off-spin.

Born on 7 July 2000, Devdutt Padikkal is an Indian international cricketer who plays for the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Karnataka in local cricket. He made his India debut against Sri Lanka in the 2021 away T20I. Additionally, he has also represented the India under-19 team.

The 2020 Indian Premier League's Emerging Player Award was awarded to Padikkal, a valuable asset for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Devdutt Padikkal Career

Devdutt Padikkal's cricketing journey began at a young age, representing Karnataka at the under-16 and under-19 levels. He impressed with his batting prowess, earning a first-class debut for Karnataka in 2018.

Following a successful domestic season, he was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL auction in December 2018. He quickly grabbed attention with a century on his IPL debut in 2021. Padikkal has continued to impress across formats, and was picked in the India’s T20I and ODI squad in 2021. He played for India in the longest format in February 2024, scoring 65 not out.

Devdutt Padikkal Domestic Career

Devdutt first shot into limelight in 2017 when he got picked up by the Bellary Tuskers in the KPL Draft. During the 2017 KPL, he smashed 72 against the Bengaluru Blasters and began to evoke memories of Yuvraj Singh in his earlier days.A year later Devdutt made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy on 28 November 2018. In 15 FC matches so far, Devdutt has scored 907 runs so far with his highest score being 99.

Devdutt was also part of the victorious team at the U-19 Asia Cup. The left-hander notched 183 runs in four matches at an average of 45.75 with a top score of 121 against the UAE in Bangladesh. Devdutt started the 2019-20 domestic season with a bang. In the first game, he compiled a 58 in the opening game of the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Jharkhand. There was no looking back for the youngster post that knock. He smashed his maiden List A ton against Saurashtra and followed it up with another unbeaten century in the next game against Goa.

He has 580 runs from 12 T20 matches at an average of 64.44 and a strike rate of 175.75, including a fantastic 122* in what was his debut T20 season for the senior state team.

Devdutt Padikkal IPL Career

With ample talent and age on his side, the 20-year-old was roped in by his home franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore, in the 2019 IPL auctions. Unsurprisingly, with not much to show apart from a few good knocks in the Ranji Trophy, Devdutt Padikkal was benched for the entirety of IPL 2019.

IPL 2020 is expected to be a breakthrough season for the superstar as there is a high chance that he will be played in the starting XI regularly.

Batting alongside legends such as Virat Kohli, de Villiers, Finch and even someone as experienced as Parthiv Patel can only do Devdutt Padikkal good, even if the pressure of expectations from fans is something that might bog him down.

In the Indian Premier League of 2021, Devdutt achieved his first-ever century with a score of 101 not out, helping Royal Challengers Bangalore defeat the Rajasthan Royals by ten wickets.

He was signed by the Rajasthan Royals in February 2022 at the Indian Premier League 2022 auction. Padikkal made his first-class century in March 2022 against Puducherry in the 2021–22 Ranji Trophy match. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, he reached his 1000th IPL run in April 2022

Ahead of the 2024 season's auction, he was released and traded to the Lucknow Super Giants in November 2023.

Padikkal was selected to represent India in the T20 and One day International series against Sri Lanka in June 2021. He made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka on 28 July 2021 and has played 2 T20I so far. He debuted in the Test series for India against England in February 2024. HE scored 65 nou out in his debut innings.

Padikkal has not played any ODI for India so far.

Devdutt Padikkal Test Career

He replaced KL Rahul in the Indian Test team for the scheduled series against England in February 2024. On March 7, 2024, he played his first Test match in the fifth game of the same series. Padikkal's opening test innings saw him score 65 runs off 103 balls. He hit one six and ten fours in his inning.

Devdutt Padikkal T20I Career

He was included in India's Twenty20 International (T20I) and One Day International (ODI) teams for their series against Sri Lanka in June 2021. On July 28, 2021, he played his first T20I match for India against Sri Lanka.

He started representing Karnataka in the under-16 and under-19 age categories in 2014. He was picked in the 2017 Karnataka Premier League season by Bellary Tuskers. He was included in the India A team for the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy in October 2019. On November 8, 2019, he made his T20 debut for Karnataka in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for the 2019–20 season.

Devdutt Padikkal was born on July 7, 2000, to Ambini Padikkal and Babunu Kunnath in Edappal, Kerala. He completed his education at St Joseph High School, St. Joseph University, and St. Joseph College of Commerce. Devdutt's father was always a cricket enthusiast and he spotted his son holding a bat at just a mere age of 3. The journey started when his family decided to move from Hyderabad to Bangalore only to provide him with a better cricketing opportunity. The Karnataka Institute of Cricket at Bangalore was the ideal place for the left-handed batsmen and soon got enrolled in the summer camp in 2009. Naseeruddin, Devdutt's coach, spotted him batting at the nets and realised that he had a talented kid in his hands.
