That brings us to the end of the coverage for this match. West Indies would be delighted at registering their biggest win by runs over South Africa in T20Is. Even though, there are a bunch of first choice players missing from both the teams, this win will give West Indies the confidence they need going into the T20 World Cup. For South Africa, there are a couple more matches to come in this series. They would want to put on an improved performance as a team. Also, the players who haven't made the World Cup squad, would want to put in impactful performances. We will be on our toes bringing you the ball by ball coverage from the second match of the series too. Join us for that in a couple of days. For now, the duo of Darpan Tikiya and Arya Sekhar Chakraborty wave you goodbye! Stay tuned to Sportskeeda for more sporting action.
Brandon King (Player of the Match and West Indies captain): Yeah obviously leading upto the World Cup we want to play good cricket. All around we played very good cricket. I think I knew the conditions and was aware it wasn't easy to bat on. I knew it will get difficult as the innings progressed so wanted to take advantage in the powerplay. We could have got 200-220 from a situation we were in but the pitch was difficult. Motie is a very skilful bowler and has been very reliable for us. Yeah ofcourse, Forde has a lot of confidence as a player. He bowls very well with the new ball and hopefully it will give a lot of confidence. Well you know the group of guys were coming from a training camp and we wanted to play a certain brand of cricket going into the World Cup. We did pretty well today, the consistency of the bowlers impressed me.
Rassie van der Dussen (South Africa captain): Yeah look I think we took a bit long to get into the match. The first ten overs where they won the game. It was a 150 par wicket. Credit to Brandon King for playing the way he did. I think we could have just played a bit differently. We took a bit long to make those tactical changes. It could have been much more even had King not played that innings. I mean conditions like this, Phehlukwayo is very difficult to get away. He is cricket over the last year and half has been great. Yeah Baartman is one of those guys who summed up the conditions fastest from our bowling attack. He is absolutely lethal. I am glad that he made his debut and he will take a lot of confidence going into the World Cup. We had Reeza and myself in, we wouldn't blame it on that. Their spinners tied us down and kept taking wickets. Yeah I mean Reeza showed us how to play on this wicket. Going into the World Cup, this will give a lot of confidence. West Indies are a very dangerous team and it was in the first ten overs where we couldn't quite execute our plans.
The post match presentation is coming up. Meanwhile, scroll below to go through the summary of the second innings.
West Indies win by 28 runs.
West Indies 175/8 (20 overs) Brandon King 79 (45) | Ottniel Baartman 3/26
South Africa 147 (19.5 overs) Reeza Hendricks 87 (51) | Gudakesh Motie 3/25
West Indies have registered a convincing win in front of a passionate crowd at the Sabina Park in Jamaica. They were clinical with the ball. Right from the second delivery which sent Quinton de Kock packing, the hosts were on top and never did they relent or let the pressure ease.
Brandon King has had a spectacular day in the field. It was his first game as the West Indies skipper. He got runs in front of his home crowd and then captained really well. He made sure that he rotated his bowlers around and did not give South African batters a chance to settle against any of them.
The bowlers repaid the faith by delivering according to plans. The spinners in particular were the shining light. They got assistance from the wicket and made the most of it. Gudakesh Motie was the star. However, we shall not forget the contributions of Chase and Allen too. The pacers chipped in whenever they had the chance and SA looked like being behind the 8-ball pretty much throughout the innings.
For them, Reeza Hendricks put on a fight with a courageous knock of 87. But alas, he did not have any partners who stayed at the crease for long.
West Indies win the match and go 1-0 up in the series.
19.5 Matthew Forde to Ottniel Baartman, WICKET! West Indies win by 28 runs. Full and straight from Matthew Forde and Baartman was way too late into the shot, goes under his bat, was bowled at pace and the middle stump has been rattled. West Indies have taken a 1-0 lead in the six-match series.
Ottniel Baartman b Matthew Forde 0 (1b, 0x4, 0x6)
Ottniel Baartman, RHB, comes out to bat for the first time in T20Is
It is a valiant knock from Hendricks. Only if he had someone to support him from the other end.
19.4 Matthew Forde to Reeza Hendricks, WICKET! Back of the hand pace-off delivery does the trick and Hendricks departs for a well made 87. The length was much fuller on this occasion, Hendricks goes for a heave across the line but was a bit early into the shot, gets nowhere close to the timing he was after and Kyle Mayers at deep midwicket doesn't make a mistake. Reeza Hendricks c Kyle Mayers b Matthew Forde 87 (51b, 6x4, 6x6)
Doesn't run. Can he get 13 more runs and complete a hundred?
19.3 Matthew Forde to Reeza Hendricks, digs out the fuller-length delivery around the middle stump, down towards the long-on fielder.
