Francis Ngannou's sudden rise in the sport of MMA has been nothing short of a miracle. Born and raised in Batie, Cameroon, Ngannou had to leave his parents and live with his aunt at the age of 10. While working in a sand quarry, he was approached by several gangs to join them. However, he declined all those routes and started to pursue boxing at the age of 22. After a rough couple of years, at the age of 26, he decided to move to Paris, France, to pursue the sport professionally. Things didn’t go well, as he was jailed for two months upon reaching Europe for illegally crossing the border.
After reaching France, he was homeless for months. Ngannou was then introduced to Fernand Lopez and the MMA factory by a friend. Ngannou got fully invested in MMA and was training and sleeping at the gym. Fernand Lopez even lent some of his MMA equipment to Ngannou. In 2013, he made his professional MMA debut at 100% Fight. In 2015, after compiling a 5-1 record at the promotion, the UFC signed him. So far, he has compiled a 12-2 record in the UFC. The two losses came at the hands of Derrick Lewis and Stipe Miocic. However, he defeated Stipe Miocic in their highly anticipated rematch for the UFC heavyweight championship at UFC 260. Ngannou’s last fight in the organization was against Ciryl Gane at UFC 270, after which he cut ties with the promotion to pursue his boxing and entrepreneurial goals.
