Rivals.com gave him a 4-star recruit rating and he was ranked as the fourth-best defensive end of his class. He decided to further pursue his education and football at the Ohio State University.
While playing for the Buckeyes, Joey Bosa put in notable performances on the field. After three years and thirty eight games, Joey Bosa had stats which read 148 tackles out of which 51 were tackles for loss, 26 sacks, 1 interception and 5 forced fumbles. He had an excellent sophomore year winning multiple Big Ten awards along the way. His college career came to an end after his junior year when he declared for the 2016 NFL draft.
Joey Bosa’s NFL Journey
Joey Bosa was all set to debut in the NFL from the first game of the 2016 season, but unfortunately for him, he had a hamstring injury that kept him out of the side for the first four games. Even so, Bosa ended the year with 41 tackles, 10.5 sacks and 1 forced fumble in just his 12 games. This performance was good enough for him to win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Bosa continued from strength to strength and put in another excellent season in 2017, however, in the 2018 season, he suffered a foot injury that kept him off the field till week 11. He made his first postseason starts in the same year.
With solid efforts on the field, Bosa was awarded the AFC Defensive Player of the Week in week 8 of the 2019 season. Moreover, this was a wonderful week for the Bosa family as a whole as his younger brother Nick was awarded the NFC Defensive Player of the Week. In 2020, Joey signed a new contract with the Chargers that made him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. Bosa has remained a steady and reliable player for the Chargers throughout his seven year career so far, even though he did miss most of 2022 with a groin injury that required surgery.

Joey Bosa’s Personal Life and Family Background
Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Joey is the elder son of John Bosa and Cheryl Bosa. Born on July 11, 1995, Joey has turned twenty-eight years old just recently. For the Bosa brothers, playing football was a very easy decision as their father was also a professional player himself.
Joey Bosa’s Father
John Bosa was born in Keene, New Hampshire. He took to playing football and was a very good player for Keene High School. After completing his high school, he got a full athletic scholarship to play for the Boston College Eagles. He was the first member of the Bosa family to make it to the NFL. He was selected in the 1987 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. Like his sons, John also played on the defense as a defensive end. However, as fate would have it, John Bosa could play in the league for only three years where he recorded 7 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries. Unfortunately, there are not a whole lot of other details about his playing career. It has been reported that John and the Dolphins management couldn’t see eye to eye on the contract, costing him lots of practice time during training camp. Furthermore, nagging injuries also played their part and he wasn’t able to become the player that the Dolphins were expecting.
After Nick Bosa was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Bosa’s became the third family to have three members get selected in the first round after Matthews and Mannings.
As a father who had played professional football, it would have been natural for him to introduce the game to his boys. However, he never really forced his kids into it and interestingly, both boys were the ones to constantly nag their father so that they could pursue the sport willingly.
Life after football has been very good for John as he invested his money into local real estate and also started his own gym with his brother-in-law Eric Kumerow. Eric is not only John’s business partner and brother-in-law, but the two were drafted back to back by the Dolphins and they both shared similar issues with the management and were out of the league after just three seasons. It was on the field where they first became good friends.
Joey Bosa’s Mother
Cheryl Bosa, the mother of Joey and Nick Bosa is a Luxury Real Estate Advisor at Engel & Völkers Florida according to her LinkedIn page. She still lives in Fort Lauderdale and represents their sports and entertainment division. Cheryl has been associated with football from her younger days as her brother Eric and her husband John were both former NFL players. After their careers never took off, she has been extremely supportive towards her kids to ensure that they get a chance to make the best of the opportunities they have gotten. She is a constant traveler during the weekends and she makes it a point to attend as many of her sons’ games as she can.
Joey Bosa’s Brother
Nick Bosa has followed in the footsteps of his father and more recently older brother by becoming another NFL member of the Bosa family. Nick, like his father earlier, is a defensive end and currently plays for the San Francisco 49ers. Nick was attracted towards the sport from an early age especially after his older brother Joey started playing. Nick seems to have been naturally gifted from his early days. He also attended the same high school and college as his brother and found tremendous success on the field in both places. In fact, such was his performance in college, that he was considered as the number one overall pick for the 2019 NFL Draft by numerous analysts and scouts. Eventually, he was picked number two overall by the 49ers behind Kyler Murray who was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals.
Nick has had an excellent start to his NFL career. He was awarded the NFL Rookie of the Year for the 2019 season. Also in his rookie year, he helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl where they came up short against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. In just week two of the 2020 season, Nick tore his ACL and was unable to take any further part in the remaining games. However, he recovered well enough to take the league by storm in 2021 earning himself his first NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Joey Bosa’s Relationship Status
At present Joey Bosa is not in a relationship with anyone. He has been single for a very long time and there are only speculative reports regarding a past girlfriend. For the moment though, Bosa is fully focused on his playing career and his main intention is to get back on the field and help his team reach the Super Bowl.
