About New Orleans Saints

Competing in the NFC South division of the NFL, the New Orleans Saints are one of the expansion teams added to the NFL in 1966. However, it took the squad 20 years to record their first successful season, making the futility of their efforts more apparent. The Saints had a successful run of form during the 1990s, making it to the playoffs 4 times. However, Drew Brees, who breathed life into a lackluster Saints side, could be attributed to the change in the Saints' fortune.

Brees and Sean Payton joined the Saints organization in 2006, and the duo made New Orleans the team to beat in the NFC South, winning the division 7 times from 2006 till 2020. The star Quarterback-Head Coach combo also guided the Saints to 9 playoff appearances during their time in New Orleans. However, the retirement of Drew Brees in 2021 and the temporary retirement of Sean Payton in the following year have left the Saints starving for a playoff football ever since. The New Orleans Saints franchise is valued at around $4.4 billion, as per the valuation presented by Forbes in August 2024.

New Orleans Saints Roster 2025-26

The Saints were not quite active in free agency, as they only brought in a few new faces in the building. Safety Justin Reid was brought in as a replacement after Will Harris made his way to Washington during free agency. They also strengthened the cornerback room by bringing in a familiar face in Isaac Yiadom and inking him to a three-year deal, as per ESPN. New Orleans might have liked what they saw from former No.2 overall pick Chase Young (who they had signed to a one-year deal in 2024), as evidenced by them extending him to three more years, per Spotrac. The offensive side of the ball saw a veteran in wide receiver Brandin Cooks get added to the squad.

However, the sudden retirement of quarterback Derek Carr has left the team looking to find a replacement in-house. Fortunately for them, they took a signal caller, Tyler Shough, with their second-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Unfortunately, the Saints' QB room, which also consists of Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener, severely lacks in-game experience, as evidenced by both Rattler and Haener starting in only 7 pro games as of May 2025. However, adding offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. in the first round of the 2025 draft certainly warrants some confidence when it comes to protecting the young signal caller.

Gayle Benson, the owner of the New Orleans Saints, is one of the ten female NFL owners. Beneson, who is a businesswoman, also owns the New Orleans Pelicans (NBA) and is one of the 5 female owners in the NBA. Following her husband, Tom Benson's, death in 2018, she became the principal owner of both franchises. She is also involved in various philanthropic activities.

During her formative years, Benson went to St. Joseph, St. Anthony, and Holy Name of Mary schools before she graduated from Martin Behrman High School in 1966. Prior to making a name for herself in the business world, Benson served in receptionist and secretarial positions while pursuing interior design. Kellen Moore, the first-time head coach, was brought in by the New Orleans Saints to right the ship of the franchise, which has been in tatters since Drew Brees rode into the sunset a few years ago. Moore, who held the position of offensive coordinator for the past six years with three different NFL franchises, was an OC of the Philadelphia Eagles team that won the Super Bowl in 2025. Moore is considered by many as a quarterback whisperer for the work he did back in Dallas with Dak Prescott. Saints fans would be hoping that he could do the same for the young signal callers of the franchise. As a player, Moore spent most of his career as a backup in the NFL and played for Boise State during his collegiate tenure.

New Orleans Saints Quarterback

Derek Carr's abrupt retirement has opened the door for Tyler Shough, Jake Haener, and Spencer Rattler to compete for the starting spot. Of all three quarterbacks on the roster (as of May 2025), Shough is the only day 2 pick signal caller, as both Rattler and Haener were taken on day 3. Looking specifically from an in-game experience standpoint, Rattler has played the most college games out of all three. However, in a small sample size of Rattler's pro career, he threw for more picks than touchdowns in 6 games he started in the 2024 season, and was on the losing end of all six. If Saints don't feel good about either of the trio come August 2025, there would still be time left for Kellen Moore and Mickey Loomis to search for a veteran signal caller before the season starts.

New Orleans Saints Championships

The New Orleans Saints faced one of the longest postseason droughts in the history of the game. They joined the league in 1967 but had to wait for two decades for their first postseason game. The arrival of Drew Brees and Sean Payton helped turn the ship around and made the franchise into a perennial Super Bowl contender. The Saints have 14 playoff appearances and one Super Bowl win as of 2025. Super Bowl XLIV was the first time the franchise appeared in a Super Bowl, and it has been their only appearance in the big game as of May 2025.

The Saints also hold 1 Conference Championship and 9 Divisional titles, apart from their Vince Lombardi trophy as of May 2025.
