Commentary

Right then. Six sessions and two and a half days of cricket. That's all it took to dismantle the Bazball hype. All jokes aside, Ben Stokes and his side have it all to do in the next two games. It won't be a matter of going back to the drawing board, perhaps, but it will be a reality check for the side. As for South Africa, they can put their legs up with this game finished with two days to spare before the caravan moves to Old Trafford, Manchester, in less than a week's time. Kagiso Rabada is the Player of the Match. Here is what he has to say: It’s always special to contribute to the team's success. For us to get over the line at Lord’s, really special. (On his fifer) To be honest, I didn’t know about those stats. All I want to do is stick to the processes and contribute to the team. The processes will take care of the rest. You always learn from experiences. Bowling on pitches here is different, they aren’t as quick as back home. So it's all about getting used to the Dukes ball and adjust your lines and lengths. (On a name for pace attack) I’ll let you guys decide on that. Kesh (Maharaj) has been an outstanding performer for us and he did it again with those two early breakthroughs. Nobody would have expected that from him. Glad we could finish this game off with two days to spare.

Dean Elgar: I can't (believe it has finished so quickly) but I think I will when I wake up tomorrow with a hangover. We thought they'd bat hard and get a big lead. When it was our turn to bowl, we had to put the ball in the right areas. The guys did a great job. It was a team effort, there were a few standout performances but everyone had played their part, including the guys who weren't playing. So it is a pretty good squad effort. Very grateful with a young side. I have got a great think-tank behind the scenes. Good coaches who give great advice. As things work out, with Kesh getting a few wickets. (Anrich Nortje's spell) It was some of the quickest bowling I have seen. It was a hostile spell of bowling. He is an angry man and you don't want to poke the bear. He bowls at 90 mph. It's great to have him in my changing room. (On his partnership with Erwee) Having Sarel around helps. He's an experienced player and a great team-mate, also a pretty fiesty character. We'll enjoy tonight and let the young guys take in the moment.

Ben Stokes: We can't think too much about what was talked about before the game. We're disappointed to lose. It would be silly for me to say anything different. We've got two more games to bounce back from this. (If it affects on their style of play) Absolutely not. I look at captains before me, captains after me - they are always going to get criticised at certain times by the way they want to play. That's just part and parcel of life. We know that when we perform to what we are capable of, we are capable of some incredible performances like we have shown in the previous four games. This isn't a wake-up call or anything like that. We haven't been able to execute the way we would like and South Africa were better than us. (On not playing enough red-ball cricket) I don't want to make excuses. Maybe there was a case for some of the guys to get a first-class game in the middle but I don't want to be talking about it. (Things to improve in the next game) Probably win the toss. (On Ollie Pope's knock) Another quality innings. We all know what talent he possesses. Losing the toss on a day one pitch that offered a bit, the way he played was fantastic to see. He showed even in tricky conditions you can put pressure back on the bowlers.

All smiles for the Dean Elgar and his side as they complete an emphatic victory, their fifth at the Lord's Cricket Ground since their readmission. They're greeted by the warm applause of the grand stand as they make their way back in. Rabada with a piece of timber to mark the occasion s well. What a Test match it was for him. What a Test match it was for South Africa.

The visitors made the most of the overhead conditions on a rain-curtailed day one, when Rabada ran riot to demolish England for 149 in the first innings. Apart from Ollie Pope's rearguard innings, there are hardly any positives to take from this game for the hosts.

Sarel Erwee grinded out a well-crafted 73 in the first innings, with contributions from Elgar, Maharaj and Jansen proving to be enough to carry South Africa to a healthy first innings lead. The England bowlers, to their credit, did as much as they could with the conditions on offer but the batting has let their side down.

There was not much respite in England's second innings today either, with Keshav Maharaj breaking the game open to dismiss Crawley and Pope in the first session. Ngidi got the prized scalp of Root and it was the Anrich Nortje show from there on. The express pacer accounted for Lees, Bairstow and Foakes, taking three wickets in 10 balls to leave this England innings in disarray.

An impressive cameo from Broad was entertaining but not enough to save the blushes of his side, who were dismantled by surgical precision by the deadly Proteas seam attack. Nortje accounted for Stokes and Rabada and Jansen did the clean up job from there on, to seal the deal for the side, giving them an innings win in this First Test.

To sum it up, South Africa batted for 89.1 overs in their first innings. In their two innings, England only managed to bat out 82.4 overs. None of the Bazball approach in this Test, with the hosts having all to do in the next match. Stick around for what the captains have to say!

37.4 Marco Jansen to James Anderson, OUT! KNOCKED HIM OVER! IT'S ALL OVER! Thumping win for South Africa as they go 1-0 up in the series, don't get more comprehensive than this. Full on the off-stump, Anderson makes room to play a big shot and misses, the off-stump is pegged back and South Africa celebrate!

37.3 Marco Jansen to James Anderson, BEAUTY! Full into Anderson on the fourth stump, nips it away as he was drawn into the shot, that whistles past the outside edge to the keeper again.

Jack Leach still has to wait to get himself off the mark. It's a matter of time before one of these two tailenders are rolled over, really. Will be some achievement if they make South Africa bat again.
