Matthew James Potts, popularly known as Matthew Potts, is an English cricketer born on October 29, 1998, in Sunderland, Durham. An impressive seamer at the helm, Potts shot to fame with his expertise in the longest format of the game. He is primarily a bowler, with a bowling style of right-arm medium-fast, and is a right-handed batter.

In recent years, Potts has started to become a regular member of the English cricket team. He represents his home team Durham in the English domestic setup and plays for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.

At the age of 18, Matthew Potts made his domestic debut for his home side Durham against Kent on June 8, 2017. He played under the leadership of former English skipper Paul Collingwood in Canterbury in the County Championship Division Two. On his first-class (FC) debut, he was dismissed for a duck in the first innings and went wicketless in the second. Potts managed to pick up a solitary wicket in the second innings.

Under the captaincy of Tom Latham, the 25-year-old pacer made his List-A debut for Durham against Yorkshire in Chester-le-Street in the Royal London One-Day Cup 2018 on May 18, 2018. He picked up a three-wicket haul in his maiden outing, which included the likes of Indian Test veteran Cheteshwar Pujara, Adam Lyth, and Harry Brook.

In the T20 Blast 2019, Potts made his T20 debut for Durham against Northamptonshire in Chester-le-Street on July 19, 2019. He picked up a couple of wickets in the match and was economical with the ball too. Potts returned with figures of 3-0-11-2 at an economy of 3.66 and conceded just a solitary boundary.

In the County Championship Division One 2024, Potts added a maiden first-class century to his name. Batting as a night watchman, the pacer recorded an unbeaten 149 against Warwickshire in Birmingham. Later, he wreaked havoc against Lancashire in their encounter held at Chester-le-Street. The speedster registered his career-best haul of 9/68 to help Durham record a victory by an innings and 63 runs.

In the recently concluded five-match ODI series, Potts was named in the English squad to face the Australian cricket team at home. He finished the series with 8 wickets in 5 innings at an average of 24.75 and was the joint-highest wicket-taker alongside Aussie leggie Adam Zampa. He picked up his maiden ODI four-wicket haul in the fourth ODI to help the hosts level the series 2-2. The crucial dismissals of Steve Smith and Alex Carey meant that England inflicted a heavy defeat upon the visitors by a huge margin of 186 runs.

On June 5, 2022, Matthew Potts earned his maiden international cap for the English cricket team against New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s in New Zealand’s tour of England in 2022. The youngster was impressive on debut with his genuine pace and grabbed a four-wicket haul in the first innings. He ran through the middle order and dismissed the likes of skipper Kane Williamson, the in-form Daryl Mitchell, and wicketkeeper Tom Blundell. The Kiwis were reeling thanks to Jimmy Anderson and Matthew Potts. However, the speedster was dismissed for a duck by Trent Boult in his maiden innings with the bat. Potts went on to pick up a couple of wickets in each innings in the postponed fifth Test against India to help the hosts level the series 2-2. He featured in the recently concluded Test series of Sri Lanka’s tour of England 2024. The pacer took 5 wickets across two Tests.
