Traditionally it's not a big scoring venue. It's a big ground, 75m down the ground, 69m right to the off-side and 68m to the on-side. It's a red soil pitch. It's a good pitch for batting. Red soil suits the spinners. It's rock hard, there's tiny bit of grass and no moisture underneath. England will prefer with pace, they are not that comfortable playing spinners. Commentary

A thoroughly professional performance from the Men in Blue as they take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. They had to struggle towards the end but overall, they were head and shoulders above their opposition. The only phase which was won by England was the first 10 overs of the match while Phil Salt and Ben Duckett went berserk. Since then, it was all India and it reflects on the result. It gets very difficult to come back in a three match series after losing the first match but England has the players and the talent to turn it around. We will move to Cuttack from here on for the second ODI which is slated to be played on February 9 (Sunday). We have lots of cricketing action lined up in the coming days. Shubhman Gill is the Player of the Match, here is what he has to say: "I was just trying to be positive. There was a little bit in it for the fast bowlers with the new ball. The idea was not to get too bogged down and be positive. Shreyas Iyer batted really well. When a player comes like that and takes the game on, it puts the opposition on the back foot. Obviously it was a good decision on his part and it helped me. I think the wicket was a bit double paced. The spinners varied the pace well. When they bowled slow, it spun. We had the plan to score more towards the square. (On his role as the vice-captain) In batting, not much has changed. But in the field, I try to be a bit more involve. Trying to learn how Rohit bhai thinks. He has told me if there is something that I feel can be done, then I should not hesitate in telling him."

Rohit Sharma (India captain): "Pretty happy because we all knew we were coming off after a long time playing this format. Right from the beginning we were right on the mark. It definitely didn't start off well with their openers going great guns. You have time to get back into an ODI game. Lot of credit to the bowlers. Everyone chipped in and it was necessary for us to keep that going. We picked wickets at crucial junctures and the fielding was brilliant. We want a leftie in the middle. We know there are a couple of spinners bowling into the left hander. Axar has improved so much with the bat. Gill and Axar batted really well when we were under a bit of pressure. Overall as a team we want to do the right things more often than not and try to tick more boxes in terms of bowling, batting. I felt we shouldn't have lost those wickets towards the end. When guys try to put pressure on the bowlers, things like this can happen.

Jos Buttler (England captain): "Disappointed not to win the game. We got off to a fantastic start in the powerplay. But losing four wickets close together set us back. In the end, the way the wicket played, another 40-50 runs could have made it interesting. We had them 20/2. At that time, the game was in balance. Another wicket and we would have been ahead. This is obviously not how we want to play. We want to keep the pressure on the opposition. Keep the momentum going for as long as possible. It has been the same through the T20s and today. We have done that in some stages, but we need to we have to extend that momentum for a bit longer."

Axar Patel, speaks to the host broadcaster, here is what he has to say: "I was already told that I could be promoted in the order depending on the right-left combination. (On bowling) They played good shots at the top, credit to them. But we know that if we stick to our lines and lengths, we won't be easy to get away. We knew that the odd ball will hold up in the wicket and we just had to wait for them to make mistakes. Though, their spinners got more purchase. Maybe we should have varied the pace a bit more. (On the partnership with Gill) The conversation between me and Gill were about staying positive. We were constantly discussing who will attack which bowler and had the plan to finish it off."

India have taken a 1-0 lead in the three match series on the back of a splendid run chase. After losing two early wickets, it was all India as Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill treated the England bowlers with disdain. Axar Patel also chipped in with a valuable fifty as India knocked over the runs in the over and ended up winning by 6 wickets. The target of 249 was under par for the course especially with dew being a factor in the second half of the innings at Jamtha.

The start was relentless from England’s spearhead Jofra Archer. He beat the bat of Jaiswal on a number of occasions before eventually inducing the edge. Rohit Sharma’s poor form continued as he chipped one straight to the short midwicket fielder as the ball didn't seem to come onto the bat at the pace he anticipated.

India was under a bit of pressure but Shreyas Iyer took the chase by the scruff of the neck and turned the game around within a blink of an eye. Iyer looked in commanding touch and the pull shot to Jofra Archer provided him the much needed rhythm and there was no stopping him from there on. Shubman Gill played the supporting role to perfection but kept finding the boundaries from time to time.

It was Jacob Bethell who brought an end to a superlative knock from Shreyas Iyer for 58 as he trapped him right in front of the stumps of an attempted sweep. Axar Patel was sent up the order and the left hand right hand combination worked wonders. Axar was sent in to counter the left arm spinner and the leg spinner and he didn't disappoint. He started off in an aggressive fashion and struck a couple of boundaries early on to put the England bowlers on the backfoot.

Gill also started taking a few chances. He had a few cramp issues and had to take some pain killers to get going. The duo of Gill and Axar shared a 108 run stand and it came at a good time. Just when the match seemed to be going out of England’s hand, Adil Rashid bowled a stunning delivery to send back Axar Patel.

India lost their way a bit with the wickets of KL Rahul and Shubman Gill but Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja managed to hold their nerves and saw India over the finish line with more than 11 overs to spare.
