Steven Smith is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: I thought it was a great performance, it went quite deep in the end, I got off to a pretty good start and Fraser played really nice. Finch didn't get going, but we know how dangerous he is and we got him out at a crucial time, I thought the boys bowled well in the surg and that sort of shifted the momentum to our favor. We've got a good bunch of guys, held on to the same guys for long time, we got a good culture and hopefully another big season for us. I started well, probably got stuck in the middle, didn't get much strike and I thought that was a reasonable total in the end. Loved people coming out in big numbers for the first game of the season, lots of pink, always support which is great. Pretty chilled, I like playing Big Bash, like to open and express myself and get the backing of the guys and really enjoy playing here. Fly tomorrow, gets straight into it and it's a big summer and Pakistan are a good side, they got some dangerous players with bat and ball, hopefully more success against them. I love playing at the SCG and my favorite place to bat in the world, it's been kind to me and looking forward, can't wait.
Sydney Sixers won by 8 runs Steven Smith 61 (42) | Jake Fraser-McGurk 48 (24) Ben Dwarshuis 3-36 (4) | Will Sutherland 3-36 (4)
High-pressure situation and the Sixers relied on the two experienced senior pros to do the job with the ball and both Abbott & Dwarshuis were exceptional at the death. The Sixers kickstart their campaign with a victory in front of their home fans, while the Renegades showed a lot of fight and were in the game throughout, but couldn't get the job done eventually
It was a poor start from them as the openers departed cheaply but the highlight of the early phase was Fraser McGurk and his impressive shot-making skills. He was timing the ball impeccably and his presence was bothering the Sixers. He looked in sumptuous touch until Dwarshuis bowled a clever slow bumper to get the better of him.
Finch, on the other hand, anchored the innings but the later half of the match was all about Will Sutherland and his powerful strikes. He kept the Renegades in the contest by going after the bowlers but didn't get any significant support at the other end. With 28 needed in 12 deliveries, Sutherland faced just two deliveries in the penultimate over and that led to the team's downfall. He reached his maiden half-century but painfully, just couldn't get his team past the finish line

19.6 Ben Dwarshuis to Will Sutherland, DWARSHUIS HOLDS ON TO HIS NERVE! Sydney Sixers start off the season with a win and Renegades think they missed out here. Back of a length into the batter, Sutherland camps back to power it away but mistimed it in the air to long-on, fielder stops it on the bounce as they take the single.
19.5 Ben Dwarshuis to Will Sutherland, OH! Great change of pace from Dwarshuis and that also keeps low. Back of a length outside the off-stump, Sutherland has a big swipe and misses.
Breathtaking stuff from Silk. He comes up with a full blooded dive and he made sure to catch the ball on the bounce. Sutherland brought up his maiden BBL fifty
19.4 Ben Dwarshuis to Will Sutherland, OH MY WORD! Silk the superman in the field, what a stop that and could well be the difference in the game here, unbelievable stuff. Sutherland powered the swipe and was heading to the ropes but Silk himself in the air and stops it one handed to his left and keeps them to just two.
19.3 Ben Dwarshuis to Will Sutherland, takes the pace off, back of a length outside the off-stump. Sutherland hangs back, swipes it hard to deep mid-wicket and they come back for a brace.
19.2 Ben Dwarshuis to Will Sutherland, SIX! BANG! Decisive hit from Sutherland, you beauty! Length delivery on the leg-stump, Sutherland with stand and deliver stuff as he clobbered it way over deep backward square-leg for a ginormous hit for a maximum.
