Moises Henriques Biography
Moises Constantino Henriques is an Australian professional cricket player. He was born on 1 February 1987 in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal and moved to Australia with his family when he was just one year old.
Henriques’s role in the team is as an all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm medium-fast. He is regarded as one of the talented all-rounders in Australian cricket at the present especially in ODIs and T20s.
He is the highest wicket-taker in the history of Under-19 World Cup along with Greg Thompson with 27 wickets.
Background
Being a consistent performer in school cricket, he was selected for the U-19 cricket team when he was just 16 years old. In 2004, U-19 Cricket World Cup held in Bangladesh, where he took 11 scalps at an average of 19.27 and also scored 95 runs.
He continued his splendid performance when Australian U-19 cricket team toured India for an ODI series. Though, Australia lost the series but Henriques scored 132 runs at an average of 44 and picked 8 wickets.
In 2006, he captained Australian U-19 team in World Cup and led them to the semi-finals. In the tournament, he was brilliant as he scored 150 runs and took 16 wickets at 10.52.
On 2 January 2006, when he was just 18, he played his first List-A game for New South Wales.
In the same year, he made his first-class debut against South Australia on 17 October.
In a match against Queensland he took 5 wickets and became the youngest New South Wales player to pick up a 5-wicket haul in a first-class innings since Doug Walters.
Debut
On 15 February 2009, Henriques made his international debut in a T20 match against New Zealand, in which he was run out for only 1 run.
In 2009, Henriques was called up for an ODI series against India as a replacement for injured James Hopes and made his debut on 31 October.
His Test debut also came against India on 22 February 2013.
In the first innings of the game, he made 68 runs and continued his show in the second innings with 81* but he couldn't sustain his form and 81* remained his highest score in Tests.
Rise to Glory
Henriques could not impact in ODIs and Tests as he only played 4 Tests and 11 ODIs since his debut.
In ODIs his batting average is just 9 and in bowling, he has only 7 wickets in his name.
But in T20s and domestic cricket, his statistics are very different.
In September 2012, he hit his first first-class ton, 161* against Tasmania. Since then he has performed consistently benign which includes his high score 265* against the same team.
Currently, He captains New South Wales in domestic cricket and Sydney Sixers in Big Bash League.
In international T20s, he is proved to be a handy economical bowler and useful batsman at lower middle order for Australia.
Club Career
In 2009, Kolkata Knight Riders signed Henriques on the basis of his domestic performance and then he played his first IPL match.
Since then he remained a regular part of the tournament but due to his on-off show, he was moved from one franchise to another. In 2010, Delhi Daredevils traded him and in 2011, he played for Mumbai Indians.
He also featured for Royal Challengers Bangalore before playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has played 57 IPL matches till date, in which scored 969 runs and took 38 wickets.
In Big Bash League, he represents Sydney Sixers and has 1149 runs in his name at a strike rate of 125.71. in bowling, he got 15 wickets at 40.70.
Captaincy
Henriques is a regular captain of New South Wales since when he was 22 years old. In Big Bash, he captained Sydney Sixers for 29 matches, in which team won 15 and lost 12 whereas 2 games finished as a tie. He is often considered as a natural leader by some cricket experts.
Records
He has 3,560 first-class runs and 101 wickets in 72 games. In List-A cricket, he has played 92 fixtures and scored 2,218 runs. He also has 76 List-A wickets.
