Rightly, as Kane Williamson said, this match ebbed and flowed from the very beginning. It was an entertaining game of test cricket with these two giants of world cricket going head to head and giving a good run for the money. Joe Root (man of the match for 11(15) and 115(170)*): It feels fantastic to win a test match after such a long time. Hopefully, we can use this as a way to step forward. We always get an arousing reception and will be forever grateful for it. The number of times Ben has won us test matches under my leadership, it was a great chance for me to give it back to him. I enjoy batting and want to score as many runs as possible. I couldn't wish for a better person to be leading this team

Ben Stokes (England skipper): It is always a good test match whenever England and New Zealand go head to head, especially at Lords. It was a special week with all the buildup to this test and winning it makes it even better. With Baz, it's been pretty good. He uses the same language in the dressing room as he does in the press conferences. (About Root) Scoring a 100 and bringing up 10000 runs, he is a very special player. (About Potts) He loved the opportunity of representing the nation. I had a chance of playing with him for three games, watching him progress in a Durham shirt. He always made an impact whenever he had the ball in his hand. It's going to be a long ride. We'll have tough times, but it will be about how we respond to it

Kane Williamson (New Zealand skipper): The game ebbed and flowed throughout. It was very difficult when the ball was new and hard and how much it changed later in the game. We came here with high hopes and some assistance from the overcast conditions. It is about moving on from games like these and taking the learnings. We thought we could've got the ball changed and if it was possible, it would've worked a great deal but credit to England. Amazing achievement from Joe Root. We'll reflect on this game and come back stronger

Oh, what a game of test cricket have we witnessed! One of the best test match chases in England was led by their ex-captain and a playing maestro, Joe Root. Let's see how things panned out in the last 10 sessions of this match.

1st innings: New Zealand - 132 all out
Colin de Grandhomme 42(50) | Matty Potts 4/13 (9.2)

The first stint for New Zealand wasn't as good as they would've expected it to be. Their top order failed to fire at all cylinders and they were in a deplorable state at 45/7. It was later the experience and pedigree of Colin de Grandhomme that took them to a respectable total at the end of the innings. Matty Potts, on debut, along with old warhorse Jimmy Anderson rocked the Kiwi batters and made their stay out in the middle living hell.

1st innings: England - 141 all out
Zak Crawley 43(56) | Tim Southee 4/55(14)

The host's batting display kicked off with an excellent opening stand between Zak Crawley and Alex Lees. Both the young batters put together a 50 run stand together before Lees was dismissed. Post that opening stand, it was a no show by the England middle order as they once again crumbled and lost wickets in clusters. Their lower order put together little stands that helped them take a 9 run lead. Tim Southee and Trent Boult were the wreckers in chief as they took 7 wickets between themselves

2nd innings: New Zealand - 285 all out
Daryl Mitchell 108(203) | Matty Potts 3/55(20)

The batting display from the Kiwis was much better in the second innings. They lost one of their openers early and lost 4 wickets for a very low score. Not long before Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell joined forces and put together 197 runs for the 5th wicket. Post Mitchell's wicket, they couldn't score many runs and were bundled out for 285, setting England a target of 277 runs to chase in the last innings of this match

2nd innings: England - 279/5
Joe Root 115(170)* | Kyle Jamieson 4/79(25)

England didn't have the best of the starts yet again to a chase. They lost their openers cheaply. Ollie Pope, their new designated number three failed to fire in the second innings also. Johnny Bairstow came out firing on all cylinders but then was dismissed soon after. It was then the present skipper and the ex-skipper that took matters into their hands and did the bulk of the scoring. Stokes had his moments in this chase as he was dismissed off a no-ball and a few edges going their way. He was dismissed later, and then the ex-skipper held his cool, shepherded the chase and took them over the line by scoring his 26th test ton and also becoming the 14th batter to scale Mount 10k in test cricket

It was at the same ground last year where England was criticized for going too slow in a chase and today, it is the same man who took the abuses that have led taken his team over the line. England's new era in test cricket is now up and running with a majestic win over the Test Champions, New Zealand. Lets hear what the captains and the man of the match has to say
