We have our finalists - Galle Marvels and the Jaffna Kings - and they'll be battling it out for the trophy at this very venue in the evening tomorrow. Join us right here on Sportskeeda for our coverage of the 2024 Lanka Premier League final, and a lot more! This is Rajarshi Das, signing off on behalf of Arya Sekhar Chakraborty. Good night!
Charith Asalanka (Jaffna Kings captain): It's a great feeling, playing in a final. Most important game will be tomorrow. 188 is a very good score on this track. They came with 10 batters. Bowlers did a fantastic job. Tough to decipher, let me have a chat with the coach first (On what combination of bowlers to go with tomorrow).
Wanindu Hasaranga (Kandy Falcons captain): Wicket was good, it was a chasable target, end of the day, it was a great game of cricket. It was a great journey, we had a great bunch of players, specially the foreigners, our seniors and youngsters got opportunity. Enjoyed a lot, specially in these conditions.
Kusal Mendis (Player of the Match): Ofcourse two three wickets went earlier and I played my natural innings. Charith helped me in the middle overs. It was not too difficult to manage things in the middle overs. I knew we can manage the innings. I am coming into form now and hopefully can continue it in the final and in the India series.
Match summary:
Jaffna Kings win by 1 run
Kusal Mendis 105*(54) | Fabian Allen 4/24 (4) Andre Fletcher 38 (21) | Ramesh Mendis 2/10 (2)
With 188 to chase on a wicket aiding spinners, the Falcons needed their openers to maximize the powerplay with pace on offer. Andre Fletcher and Dinesh Chandimal didn't disappoint, particularly the former - Fletcher blazed off to a flier, absolutely obliterating anything remotely close to his radar mercilessly. 48 runs came off the first four, Fletcher scoring 37 of them in 15 deliveries.
Once again, spin did the trick after the faster bowlers took a tap. Fabian Allen got Dinesh Chandimal to play all around one that pitched close to the toes of his left foot, and the ball deflected off them onto his stumps. Mohammad Haris then came in, struggled initially but made his intentions well known - he was willing to attack anything and everything he was close to.
Fletcher's wicket, brilliantly set up by Fabian Allen right after the powerplay, sure took a lot of momentum away from the Falcons. Haris kept scratching along, trying various strokes every now and then - there was the odd boundary every now and then but the pressure sure was on as the Jaffna Kings spinners kept things tight. Vijayakanth Viyaskanth ended Haris' stay in the middle, drawing him into a big stroke and getting him to hole out.
Wanindu Hasaranga came in, tried to go on the counter, but Viyaskanth had his man eventually. Kamindu Mendis, who, like Haris, was trying his best to attack but wasn't middling it more often than he was, tried to keep the Falcons in the hunt. He cleared the deep square boundary off Viyaskanth in the leg-spinner's final over, but holed out next ball.
Falcons kept sinking further as Allen accounted for Shanaka with one that turned sharply. Allen proceeded to clean Mathews up in his final over as well, ending with four wickets to go with two outfield catches. The game seemed to be up for the Falcons... but not under Ramesh Mendis' watch. 38 runs were needed off the last two, and with pace back on, Ramesh Mendis was well in with a chance.
Mendis picked the back-of-hand slower ones from Behrendorff perfectly, found and cleared the ropes off successive deliveries, was caught off a no ball, and Pavan Rathnayake slogged the free hit over long on. The Falcons went into the final over with plenty of momentum under their sails, Ramesh Mendis and Asitha Fernando were up against each other over the last five balls.
Fernando missed his yorker twice, was carted to and over the boundary, and with four needed off the final ball, Fernando missed his yorker again, dishing out a full toss. Unfortunately for Ramesh Mendis and the Kandy Falcons, Ramesh could hit it as far as the man at deep mid wicket and collect a brace. Jaffna Kings, having pulled off a nervy-racking win, have a shot at the title tomorrow - they face the Galle Marvels in the final. Presentations to follow....
Scenes of joy and euphoria at the R. Premadasa Stadium - the crowd were given their money's worth of entertainment at the cricket tonight! Ramesh Mendis tried, he tried till the very end, but his best efforts were just about inadequate. The Jaffna Kings had a scare or two, but they deservedly book a place in the LPL final tomorrow!

19.6 Asitha Fernando to Ramesh Mendis, low full toss around the leg stump, Mendis only manages to squeeze that off the inside half of the bat, down towards the deep midwicket fielder and only manages to complete a couple of runs. Jaffna Kings win by 1 run.
Over the ropes! Asitha Fernando misses his yorker, dishes a low full toss, and the power generated by Mendis was more than enough for the Falcons! They need a boundary off the last ball to book a place in the final...
19.5 Asitha Fernando to Ramesh Mendis, SIX! Ramesh Mendis has smashed this for a maximum. Asitha missing his length. Goes for the yorker and ends up as a full toss around the middle stump, Ramesh holds his shape, shows the full face of the bat and sends it on the sightscreen. 4 required off the final delivery.
