Commentary

That would be all from the opening game of the series. If this is anything to go by, we are set for an epic couple of weeks ahead of us. This is Dwaipayan Mukherjee, signing off with my very hardworking partner, Lavil Saldanha. We will see you soon.

Mitch Marsh, Australia Captain: This game was a pretty exciting one. Head is a special talent. We saw what he can do on multiple occasions in the past. The par score was about 200 in this surface. Very lucky to have some of the guys. They turn up when the situation calls for it. We applied pressure. That was what I would look back and be proud of it. Was a great wicket. I thought we made good use of the powerplay. Plenty of tick boxes as we move ahead.

Phil Salt, England Captain: They played well. We will give them that. They got a start. There is little one can do when the batters are bossing our bowlers in that manner. We dragged it back towards the end. That is an area we can be proud of. If we look at positives, that would be one thing. When the ball starts flying like that, we could have done better. It is about limiting the damage. Maybe some clarity in the next game is what we would be searching for. Teams get good starts but you try and drag them back. There are different phases where we can probably stage comebacks even after not the best starts. They did bowl well. We could have taken partnerships later.

Travis Head is the Player of the Match: So just for me, I'm trying to get back to playing shots quickly and using the pace well, which I think I did well. Shorty got off to crack this out the first couple over. So I think we matched well together nicely in our partnership, so it was nicer to start the series. Yeah, I surely want to play with strikers, but I think where everyone likes, especially the way we're going at the moment, whoever may be, whether it be Jake, whether it be Shorty, whether it be Mitch, the guys that I played with over the last couple years, opening the batting, when Davey's not been around, it's worked, worked really well without a consistent theme at the top. And whoever sort of steps in to be able to play that. And surely did exceptionally well today. Mitch has done this in the past, and Jake was disappointed the last three games, but with that partnership, my team always worked well. I built a good relationship with some of the guys on the team, and I get along with them pretty well. A bit of luck but I have worked hard with a good mindset

It could not have been a more eventful start to the chase with Salt mistiming the first ball of the chase horribly with Mitchell Marsh comfortably pouching the catch only for the umpire to have one of his arms horizontally outstretched to signal the worst nightmare for the opening bowler, Xavier Bartlett. Hazlewood found the right areas on this surface almost immediately and he was rewarded with the early demise of Will Jacks.

England were behind the asking rate in the initial stages of the match. Cox had been swinging but only met air on most occasions. Less slogs were needed. More traditional shots were the need of the hour. Tim David took an exceptional catch to cut short the debut innings of Jordan Cox as the Rose Bowl was sent into a deafening silence.

The chances of a chasing side winning the match after losing 3 wickets in the powerplay decreases significantly. That's exactly what happened as Phil Salt would be disappointed with the manner in which he had gone down. Bartlett returned to bowl his 4 overs in a single spell but had to leave the field after 3.4 overs owing to a niggle. England got their 50 in the 8th over. Australia got their 100 in the 8th over. So both sides definitely approached their objectives in a different way.

Similar to how spin worked for the hosts, Zampa made an immediate impact by knocking over the youngster Jacob Bethell. There were no boundary for 23 balls and England needed something to catapult themselves after being pushed back significantly. Curran and Livingstone put up 54 runs in just over 5 overs which felt like a mini comeback from the hosts but the duo departed in quick succession as the Aussies began pressing the pedal down to sprint towards the finishing line.

In the end, there was little resistance shown as the visitors go 1-0 up in the series. Presentations to follow shortly.
