Commentary

We now come to the end of our coverage of the second of five ODIs between these two sides. Australia, 2-nil up, have one hand on a series win over their rivals, on their territory at that. Both sides will now head further up north of England for the third ODI on Tuesday. Mitchell Marsh, Australia captain: These days, 270 always feels a little short, was a new-ball wicket. I thought at the halfway point 270 was enough, but you always want more. Today was a case of how many runs we get, today showed those partnerships at the end are so important in days like today. Credit to Haze for hanging around at the end for his 4 not out today. Just the experience, when you try defending a total like that. Aaron Hardie was fantastic with the ball, he was a fantastic bowling option today. Really pleasing win. The big thing for us is focusing on what we're trying to do. Playing against England in England is a tough assignment, we've had a few guys out through injuries, had a few experienced guys back today. Really pleased all around.

Harry Brook, England captain: We bowled really nicely, to restrict them to 270 on this pitch, Headingley is a tough place to bowl at, we did a good job at that. We lost wickets in the powerplay, that killed us. We took the positive options, tried to put the pressure back on them, didn't pay off. Them situations are tough, they were just not taking singles (last pair) couple of early boundaries at the start of the over, tough to drag back. Thought I couldn't have done much differently. We are a very young side, Rashid's the highest run-scorer in ODIs in this side. We're an inexperienced side playing against one of the best teams in the world. Almost a new era, it's about patience. Two games in, we're trying to have fun as well. So many positives to take, didn't go our way, we've done everything we said we'd do. Just hasn't gone our way.

Alex Carey (Man of the Match) - Has been a quite winter. Nice to spend time with the family. I think it's a busy schedule in the last few years and to work on the game off-season indoors is nice. They bowled well up front and Hazlewood hanging around in the end and did a fantastic wicket. Two speedsters coming into the team and getting early wickets is crucial. (On take a great catch to dimiss Livingstone) It's an unfortunate way to get out. But Hardie did a good job with the bat and took a few key wickets. (On being a second fiddle to Inglis) He is a great player and showed his capability in the T20 format. For me, it's nice to get an opportunity and it's great fun

The run-chase began at the speed of knots - as was expected from them, Ben Duckett and Phil Salt looked to get England off the blocks briskly. The openers made the most of a few errs in line and length from Mitchell Starc in his first two overs. Hazlewood proved to be tougher to dispatch, especially for Phil Salt, who tried to flash at one on a length at the corridor outside off stump and nicked behind.

Starc proceeded to strike twice in his next two overs, having found his rhythm back. He got the ball to angle away from Will Jacks first, induced a thick edge, and Short took an amazing catch to his right. Starc then proceeded to pin Harry Brook in front with an in-ducker in the seventh over. Ben Duckett, though, kept at it, smashing anything and everything in his radar.

England had 65 on the board with one over remaining in the powerplay. In spite of losing three wickets, it didn't look all that grim until then. The last over of the powerplay turned things firmly in the favour of the Aussies, though - Aaron Hardie did really well to latch onto a sharp return catch offered by Duckett, and proceeded to strangle Livingstone down the leg side the very next ball. The onus was on youngsters Jacob Bethell and Jamie Smith in pulling off a recovery act.

The duo got along with it, not shying away from playing their shots. Bethell was severe against anything that was dug in short, so was Smith. The duo brought up a 50-run stand for the 6th wicket, and just as it seemed they'd drag England out of troubled waters for good, Bethell chased after a wide one from Glenn Maxwell and sliced it towards Starc at short third, who did well to fling himself forward and grab the chance.

Brydon Carse joined Smith in the middle, and having given himself a bit of time at the crease, proceeded to pick up from where Bethell left off. Smith, at the other end, paced his innings nicely alongside Carse. With 20 overs remaining, England needed 112, and were looking in a decent position. Just after the drinks' break, though, Jamie Smith picked out Fraser-McGurk off Josh Hazlewood and fell one short of a half-century.

Carse tried to keep up the fight, but Adam Zampa proved to be too good for him, beating him in flight and guile, and got him to hole out. Rashid played a few shots of his own, but had too much to do eventually. A second big win for Australia over their arch-rivals - there simply seems no stopping them. Presentations to follow....

England sure are playing a brave brand of cricket, as you'd expect with McCullum at the helm. However, things just haven't clicked for the hosts so far - few new names in the set-up, might need more time to settle in.

40.2 Mitchell Starc to Olly Stone, OUT! Australia take a 2-0 lead in the series. Starc completes the formalities. Short of a length and angling back, Stone stays in motion and sways away. He didn't take his bat away as the ball brushed the other side of the willow and looped gently over first slip. Smith takes it safely
