Commentary

What a start Mohammad Rizwan has had as the captain of the ODI side! Back to back series wins in two of the toughest overseas backyards. You couldn't have asked for a better preparation for the Champions Trophy either. Though, before they head into that marquee tournament, there are a few Test matches to look forward to, starting with boxing day and new year's match against the Proteas. South Africa won the T20 series 2-0. but this clean sweep will hurt them. Hence, expect them to come roaring back like wounded lions. Remember, a solitary victory would seal a WTC final spot for the hosts. However, given what has transpired here, they will know that they cannot take Pakistan lightly. We hope you will join us on boxing day when the red ball action gets underway. Till then, it is a goodbye from Darpan and Rajarshi. Sayonara!

Rizwan calls the boys over and gather around the trophy like moths around a flame — energetic, buzzing with effervescence. They don't even wait for the trophy to be handed over to them. One of the blokes has picked it up and the celebrations have begun. "3-0. 3-0" can be heard. It is a special win for Pakistan.

Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan Captain): "Always a proud moment because the nation expects you to do this. We do our bit and leave the rest to the almighty. I was happy with the second ODI — it was the perfect example of a team game. So when everyone contributes, I am happy. Playing in foreign conditions is always challenging. But the guys gelled together and played as a team. Almighty helped us and things worked out. I don't want to praise Saim Ayub more. He is special and hope he will do more good things for Pakistan in the future."

Temba Bavuma (South Africa Captain): "Obviously a disappointing end to the series. As a team we have come out with more questions than answers. There will have to be deep introspection to be done as individuals. Klaasen was the shining light. He seemed to be batting on a different surface altogether. Great to see him batting like that. A number of us will be donning the whites in a couple of days. It is important that we come back stronger in the red ball format."

Saim Ayub has been adjudged Player Of The Match for his 101 and a wicket today, and he's also adjudged Player Of The Series for 235 runs across the series at an average of 78.33 including two hundreds! Here's what he has to say: It's very special because we won, credit goes to all the team. It's for the entire team, they all helped me in taking this award. Most important to score in winning causes, as a young player I try to not take much time. I take experience from every game, seniors help me to gather from every match, mistake and every positive. I enjoy playing with the seniors a lot, learning from them, credit goes to them.

With that, Pakistan complete a series that their fans will be talking about for a long time. After all the turmoil that Pakistan cricket has been through 2024, the year ends on a high note for them — at least in white ball cricket. A proud skipper leads them off the field and while we believe it is far too soon, we can understand the enthusiasm of Pak fans who have been regularly sending us comments drawing parallels between Mohammad Rizwan and MS Dhoni.

The two standout performers were Agha Salman and Saim Ayub. Two batters who also made pivotal contributions with ball in hand. And today, both of them shined once again. Ayub laid the foundation of a big total with his second century of the series — a knock that embodied sturdiness and was paced to perfection. Then, Salman played a bit of a blinder down the order studded with shots that made our jaws drop to the floor. Next, Ayub exhibited such control with the ball in hand that Rizwan did not feel the need to go to the man who had picked up a four-for in the last match for the major part of the innings. Another enthralling story that unfolded tonight was of debutant Sufiyan Muqeem, who got mauled in his first spell but came back to finish with four wickets to his name.

South Africa will look back at this and rue a couple of irresponsible shots played by their main batters. In hindsight, Bavuma could have avoided going for an uppish drive so early in the innings. Another day, Markram would have hit that half tracker out of the park and not straight to the fielder. In the end, as it turns out, they were never quite behind the rate. But alas, did not have the fuel to last the distance. Klaasen's whirlwind knock was the standout for them. Whilst he was out there, it seemed like a different surface altogether. From brutal slams to texbook strokes, he had it all. Only if he could have stayed out in the middle for a little longer. But hey! There is hardly any room for "coulda woulda and shoulda" in sport.

And the bowler does exactly that! Pakistan win by 36 runs.

Rizwan said "Chalo, ye out", before the ball was bowled, and it sure happened! Muqeem fires this one right in the blockhole around off stump, Maphaka was fatally late in getting his bat down. The ball crashed into the base of the off stump, toppling it. Pakistan claim the third ODI by 36 runs!
