Commentary

Match ends in a draw; Bengal pocket three points on first innings lead, Uttar Pradesh take one point.

No play was possible on the last day meaning that Bengal walked away with three points by virtue of a healthy first innings lead. Uttar Pradesh will take a solitary point from this game as well as plenty of positives given how they bounced back despite being pushed to the wall. Both teams now have four points from two games.

Start of Day 4 delayed due to bad light!

It's safe to say that a result is all but out of the window now with the start of the fourth day's play delayed due to bad light in Kanpur. While the first three days saw play commence in the second session, even that hasn't been the case thus far today.

Stumps on Day 3 - Uttar Pradesh 178/4, lead Bengal by 50 runs in the 2nd innings.

Uttar Pradesh's much-improved display with the bat continued into the final session of Day 3 even as they lost four wickets in the same period. Their lead now stands at 50 with skipper Nitish Rana taking just 43 deliveries to score 47 while remaining unbeaten. Mohammed Kaif did the star turn with the ball for Bengal as he picked up three wickets but can UP swell this lead rapidly to make a match out of it? Provided we start on time on the last day of course!

Tea on Day 3 - Uttar Pradesh 95/0, trail Bengal by 33 runs in the 2nd innings.

Play resumed at last in the second session and hosts Uttar Pradesh outscored their first innings total without losing a wicket. Samarth Singh (50*) and Aryan Juyal (40*) have put them back on track to not only set a challenging fourth innings target for Bengal, but potentially script an improbable come-from-behind victory.

Another morning session has been wiped out due to bad light in Kanpur. Considering how quickly this game has moved along though, we could yet get a result depending on when the action commences today.

Stumps on Day 2 - Uttar Pradesh 46/0, trail Bengal by 82 runs in the 2nd innings.

A much better start for Uttar Pradesh in the second innings although only 18 overs were possible in the final session of Day 2. Bengal still hold the upper hand and a few early wickets on the third morning ought to give them the advantage. With no Rinku Singh to count upon though, the opening duo of Samarth Singh (21*) and Aryan Juyal (20*) will have to forge a huge partnership to put the hosts on track.

Tea on Day 2 - Bengal 188 all out in the 1st innings, lead Uttar Pradesh by 128 runs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar recorded his best figures in first-class cricket, returning 8/41 off 22 overs as Bengal were bowled out for 188 in their first innings. The deficit stands at 128 for Uttar Pradesh, who now have to contend with a feisty pace attack to get themselves into the lead. For Bengal, Shreyansh Ghosh was dismissed for 41 while Mohammad Kaif top scored with an unbeaten 45 while batting at number 9.

Bad light has played its part in wiping out the morning session of Day 2 as well in Kanpur. Bengal's score continues to read 95/5 and how they counter the Bhuvneshwar Kumar threat could dictate terms as far as their progress in this game is concerned.

Stumps on Day 1 - Bengal 95/5, lead Uttar Pradesh by 35 runs in the 1st innings.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar made a memorable comeback in what was his first appearance in a red ball game since the Johannesburg Test of 2018. He snagged all five Bengal wickets to fall on the first day as the visitors took a lead of 35 runs by Stumps to leave the game firmly in the balance. With the game moving along at a rapid pace, opener Shreyansh Ghosh (37*) might have to accelerate at a brisk pace should wickets continue to fall early on Day 2.

Tea on Day 1 - Bengal 42/2, trail Uttar Pradesh by 18 runs in the 1st innings.

The delayed start was just the calm before the storm as it turned out. Bengal made the most of a fabulous toss to win as they rolled Uttar Pradesh over for a paltry 60 in their first innings. Only three batters managed double-figures as the Bengal seamers wreaked havoc before Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned the favor with a couple of wickets of his own. Bengal will look to make the most of the final session though and keep the hosts at bay.
