Manoj Tiwary: A Brief Biography

Manoj Tiwary Biography

Manoj Kumar Tiwary is an Indian cricketer who hails from Bengal. Born on the 14th of November, 1982, he has been nicknamed as “Chhota Dada” after his partnership with Sourav Ganguly in the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy final.

Tiwary is a right-handed batsman and a part-time leg break bowler who got into cricket at a very young age.

Background

Manoj Tiwary’s career with the national team started on the back of excellent performances in the domestic circuit. India had a disappointing campaign in the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, after which senior players like Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly were rested for the Bangladesh tour. This meant that Tiwary received his maiden call-up to represent India.

The Bengal player impressed everyone with 796 runs at a Bradmanesque average of 99.50 in the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy. In this process, he broke several records and caught the eyes of selectors.

Debut

Tiwary got his break in the 2008 CB series where he did not have any answers to Brett Lee’s pace. He scored only 2 runs off 16 deliveries but the match was called off due to rain.

His poor form continued as he did not have anything to show in the following West Indies series.

Rise to Glory

Tiwary has scored just one international hundred which came against West Indies. He scored 104* in a tough situation after India lost two wickets for one run.

A match winning 151* against Karnataka in the 4th innings of the Ranji Trophy 2006-07 semifinal is the best knock of his career. He is one of the most consistent performer in the domestic circuit.

Club Career

Tiwary has played for Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rising Pune Supergiants in the Indian Premier League. While he didn’t perform for the Daredevils, he became a regular fixture in the Knight Riders middle order having scored 856 runs in 40 games.

He did well for the Supergiants in the 2017 edition, where he scored 324 runs at an average of 32.4. But his IPL stats haven’t been rewarded as yet.

Low Points

Getting injured just before the debut match was the lowest point of his career. Injuries have dominated his career which is the prime reason for Tiwary getting limited opportunities in international cricket.
