A fine victory for India in front of a jampacked crowd at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba. That's four out of four in Trinidad with the visitors having whitewashed the one-dayers as well in Port of Spain but the action now moves over to Warner Park in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis, with the second and third T20Is taking place on August 1 and 2. Some work to do for the hosts as they look to draw level at the start of the new month. India on the other hand, will look to sustain a seamless tour along lines similar to today.

Rohit Sharma (India Captain): The nature of the pitch we knew was going to be slightly tough. Shot making wasn't that easy at the start but at the same time we understood that the guys who were set needed to carry on as long as possible. There was some grip for the spinners and the odd variation wasn't easy to pick. The nature of the pitch was slow. It wasn't easy but the way we finished to get 190 was a great effort. I didn't think this was a pitch where we could get 170-180 when we finished the first 10 overs. But we hung in there, backed our skills and got more than a par score. We want to try certain things when we bat in the first six overs, the middle-overs and how we finish the game. There are three facets of the game we try to improve and get the best out of the players. We've given a specific role for every player. There's no guarantee that it's going to come off every game but we back ourselves to go out there and execute those ideas. I think we've been able to achieve certain things. All in all it was a great effort. We want to continue doing that but we have to understand the pitches that will allow you to do that. Certain pitches won't allow you do to that and you need to take a backward step and assess how to do it. (On the fan support) I love playing here in West Indies. Whenever I've come here the Indian team has always received great support from the Indians who come over from USA and the ones who stay here, and even the local crowd from the West Indies. They support us and support good cricket.

Nicholas Pooran (West Indies Captain): Disappointed as a team. The crowd was absolutely amazing here and thank you for your support. First game of the series and we'll look to bounce back. (On the over-rate penalty) At 18 overs the score was 150. Our indiscipline paid the price and we should have been more consistent with our discipline. 190 was always going to be challenging. We needed a good start and the batters who got starts couldn't carry on. By 10 overs we already lost 4 wickets and that cost us the game. (Could they have picked a second spinner?) The spinners did bowl well but if we could have restricted them to 170-180 we could have chased it.

Dinesh Karthik is the Player of the Match. Here is what he has to say: It was a little sticky (the wicket). It wasn't an easy wicket to start on but once you got in, you knew the shots you can play. (Role of a finisher) I've been enjoying the role. It's not something you can deliver on every day but when you do, it can be an impactful and match-winning knock. You need the backing of the coach and captain, and I've got plenty of that. It's important to assess the wicket. There are a lot of things you need to be aware of - the softness of the ball, how the pitch is playing, and the situation - and that comes with practice and understanding.

Another day, another clinical defense by the Indians! They did it twice against a power-packed English outfit not too long ago and today at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, things have been no different. Of course, it was all set up by Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik whose invaluable innings powered them to a par-plus total of 190.

And par-plus it proved to be on a tacky surface. So much so that Rohit turned to Ravindra Jadeja in the third over of the innings. The move worked big time as he castled Jason Holder for a duck, after Arshdeep Singh brought Kyle Mayers' threatening stay at the crease to a screeching halt. Shamarh Brooks was looking in fine touch until he was a week early into a swipe against a Bhuvneshwar Kumar slower delivery. A wicket-maiden rounded off the Powerplay and in essence, summed up what was to come for the hosts.

A top-score of 20 tells you everything you need to know about a faulty run chase. A number of the West Indian batters, including skipper Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell and the returning Rovman Powell, got starts but not one of them could convert it into something substantial. There was purchase in the pitch for the spinners and with three of them at their disposal, India vindicated their selection in some manner.

Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers on T20I comeback as he prized out both the belligerent left-handers in Hetmyer and Pooran. Ravi Bishnoi was held back for the latter half of the innings for some reason but once he came on, there was no stopping him as he kept it simple and steady. And like he's done so often in the IPL, Arshdeep closed it out with his assortment of yorkers and slower deliveries as India ticked off yet another box heading into that T20 World Cup later this year. In the short-term scheme of things, a 1-0 lead sits beautifully with the visitors ahead of the second game coming up in Basseterre in St. Kitts. Stick around for the presentation...
