The running back committed to Georgia Tech in 2020. Despite playing in just seven games in his freshman season due to injury, the player received second-team freshman All-America honors by The Athletic as an all-purpose back. Additionally, he earned honorable mention all-conference recognition as a return specialist. He also led Georgia Tech in all-purpose yards (968) and scoring (seven TDs). Gibbs went on to rank second in multiple categories.

He transferred to the University of Alabama in 2022. The running back finished second in Crimson Tide single-season history for receptions by a running back with 44 and earned second-team All-American honors at the all-purpose spot by USA Today. He also received third-team All-American recognition from the Associated Press in the all-purpose slot.

Gibbs was named second-team All-SEC in 2022 as a running back and all-purpose player. He averaged 6.1 yards per carry, ranking third in the SEC and 20th nationally. He had a team-high of 926 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 151 carries. The running back also led the Tide in receptions with 44 for 444 yards and three scores.

His other admirable performances include rushing for 206 yards and two touchdowns against Arkansas, leading with 154 rushing yards against Texas A&M. Gibbs contributed 203 all-purpose yards against Tennessee. Despite an ankle injury against Ole Miss, the player returned for the Iron Bowl, scoring a rushing touchdown and sealing the win. In the Sugar Bowl against Kansas State, he accumulated a game-high 173 all-purpose yards.

Gibbs’s biological parents are Neka Willis and an unnamed father. His adoptive parents are Greg Ross and Dusty Ross. Although, credit as another guardian should be given to his grandmother, Angela Willis. She raised him since he was only 13 years old and is his legal guardian.

Gibbs faced many hardships throughout his early childhood. He and his grandmother had to stay at a local shelter. The shelter provided help to the small family of two with food and clothing. Dusty Ross met the Detroit’s running back at the shelter where she was volunteering. However, he wasn't adopted by the Ross family at the time. He started living with the Ross family in 2017 and was later adopted by them. His grandmother is still very much involved with Gibbs's upbringing. She still often checks up on him according to an interview she gave.

Greg Ross and Dusty Ross have four sons including Max Ross, John Ross, Ahmand Tanner, and Jahmyr Gibbs. The running back’s brother also played football. Ahmaad Tanner played for the Austin Peay State University. Max Ross, who appears to have recently graduated from high school, used to be a part of his high school football team. Josh Ross attended Georgia Tech alongside Gibbs and played on the football team with Gibbs.
