Hopefully, we would see a bit more fight from Sri Lanka in the next game. They're, after all, wounded lions after today who'd be itching to get back against their arch-rivals. Sportskeeda will keep you updated with the ball by ball action. For now, it is a goodbye from Darpan Tikiya and Arya Sekhar Chakraborty!
Sri Lanka knew they had an under-par score going into the mid-innings break. They had fallen from being 193/4 in 36 overs and in sights of a score close to 300 to 255 all out. The last 5 wickets fell for 34 runs. They needed a special effort with the ball to comeback into the match. And that is exactly what their new ball bowlers provided. Dilshan Madhushanka got a wicket with the first ball. Pramod Madhushan complimented him and soon Bangladesh were reeling at 3/23.
However, then they failed to capitalise. Credit must go to Mahmudullah who counter-attacked with a run-a-ball 37. By the time he got out, Bangladesh were well ahead of the rate and dew had started to settle in. Sri Lanka looked lost. At no point, they put extra fielders in. Or tried different bowling combinations to make it tough for the batters. Bangladesh captain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim batted sensibly too.
They went through a 60-ball period where there wasn't a single boundary scored but still made runs at around 4.5/over in that phase. Sri Lanka looked as if they has surrendered to the dew and it reflected in their captain's post match interview. The game drifted on and a victory for the hosts looked inevitable. Shanto, meanwhile got to his highest ODI score and made sure that he was out there - along with Rahim - when the winning runs were scored. Bangladesh are now 1-0 up in the series.
Najmul Hossain Shanto (Player of the Match and Bangladesh captain): We knew that with the new ball it would be hard. I just backed my skills and took my time. The pitch got very easier to bat on later due to dew. Taskin and Shoriful tried hard in the first few overs but they came back strongly. The way Riyad bhai batted that helped me a lot. Mushfi bhai also showed what he is capable of and hopefully he will continue the good work.
Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka Captain: Pathum and I batted well in first 10 overs but we struggled in last 10 overs and hence, could only manage 250. I think 280+ was a good score on this pitch. Dew made things difficult further. I hope there is no dew in next game. Dilshan and Pramod bowled well in first 10 overs, but then the dew came in.
AND SHANTO FINISHES WITH FLAIR! It has been an innings of sense as well as substance from the skipper. He stays 122 not out. Bangladesh win by 6 wickets and go 1-0 up in the ODI series.
44.4 Maheesh Theekshana to Najmul Hossain Shanto, FOUR! Najmul Hossain Shanto finishes it off in style. Bangladesh win by 6 wickets. Was a fullish-length delivery a shade outside off, Shanto just had to clear the infield, chips it up and over the extra cover fielder and it races away to the fence. What a knock from Shanto and a convincing win for the home team.
It would be fitting if the captain and the centurion finishes off with a boundary!
44.3 Maheesh Theekshana to Mushfiqur Rahim, flatter and quicker a tad outside off, nudged away from the crease towards the point region for a single.
Trying to finish the game in a fanciful manner!
44.2 Maheesh Theekshana to Mushfiqur Rahim, Rahim moves across off and tries to ramp this tossed-up delivery towards fine leg and ends up hitting it on his helmet visor.
