So that will be all from this, the 1st Test of the 3-match series. It has been a disappointing one from a West Indian point of view though. But from an English perspective, they could have written a better script to give James Anderson the farewell that he deserves! We will be back with the second match of the series next Thursday and hope that it's a bit more competitive than this one, at least. For now, this is the pair of Pradeep and Bidipto taking your leave. Keep following Sportskeeda!
James Anderson, a proud owner of 704 Test wickets in 188 matches and a true legend of the game: It's been an amazing 20-odd years! I appreciate everyone coming out here to cheer me on and then, contributing to this win, like I've tried to do all throughout my career, it's special! This week has been different. Seeing my girls ring the bell on Day 1, bowling, the fans coming out and supporting like this, yes, can't ask for more! The family is equally important for every cricketer and my family has been no different. They've been the pillars of my success, if I can call it so. Winning Test matches has always been my sole focus, but then, winning in Australia, winning in India and playing alongside some of the greats of the game will be big takeaways. The body has gone through a lot, a whole lot over the years, it's very much part of the process, but I won't have to go through that anymore! Test cricket is such that if the captain throws you the ball at 6 pm and asks you to do a job, you have to give it your all and make it happen. Such is the greatness of this format! This format asks you to perform to your best all the time, there are no shortcuts, none at all. There may be a few instances of the rub of the green going your way but otherwise, you have to be on the money right through the week. I certainly believe that Gus Atkinson is one of the names to carry the English bowling attack forward. He has put in the hard yards, he is in the mix right now to make things happen and it's his chance to take things along with the rest of the pack.
Ben Stokes (England captain): A really good start! To come out here and put in a performance like that is really special! I think before the game started, it was great to see two young guys receive their caps. And both Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson have backed it up! Gus' pace is a bonus, but he is incredibly skillful, taking 12 wickets in debut at Lord's is an amazing start! For us, about guys coming in, it is about letting them express themselves without any worry. Not feel pressurized. Great to be able to come back and contribute with the ball, hope to continue like this for the rest of the summer. I can say things for about 50 minutes for James Anderson, but just the amount of games, the number of wickets, just incredible! For us to keep him in the dressing room, for our youngsters to learn from him, words fall short! The desire to get better every single time, even at this age and stage of his career, he wanted to get better! It's been a career par excellence!
Kraigg Brathwaite (West Indies captain): Disappointed ourselves with the bat, just over 100 runs and pretty much behind throughout the game. We can be better with the ball but batting has to improve a lot. I do believe it, but the guys have to believe it with plenty of talent in pool and coming up against a good team. Team is immensely strong, it's a bit of pressure with that kind of a defeat and you have to be mentally tough. Some of the guys were part of T20 World Cup, sometimes it takes a bit of time, especially the faster bowlers. We just got to disciplined, Jason was steady. The batters including myself, come to the party in the next test. We lost the first test, we came back and shown the fight. We got to fight back, fight back strong, got to be mentally tough. (On Anderson's retirement) I don't mind, legend of the game, I won't miss him much!
Gus Atkinson is the Player of the Match for his 12-for! Here's what he has to say: It's been an incredible week, just want to say, thanks to Jimmy and to do so in his last test is incredible. Hundred percent, growing up I always looked up to Jimmy, coming here at Lord's, standing at long-off, incredible. You are allowed to come in, be the player you want to be and that has helped me immensely. I felt like, I struggled a bit for rhythm at Surrey, need a few games in hand and it's the right decision. Looking forward to the rest of the series, really good to get the win.
A sorry state of affairs comes to an end inside the first hour on Day 3 for the West Indies, as they get bowled out for less than 140 in their second essay without even one batter putting up a fight!
Gus Atkinson finishes with 12 in the match, holding the second best figures for an England bowler on Test debut! He has quick, he was hostile and he was penetrative. In this, the second innings, skipper Ben Stokes chipped in with a couple of wickets. He fielder really well too, suggesting that the all-rounder in him has risen to the occasion once again!
But the man of the moment, the man playing his final Test match after 21 years of donning the England whites, James Anderson, could not quite cling on to a return catch and finish the match! He ended with three wickets in the innings, capping off with 704 wickets in this format in 188 matches.
Gudakesh Motie hung around and finished as the not out batter for the second time in the match, but that was just about it for the visitors. If they have to make a case for themselves in this series, they have to up their game with the bat. These scores below 150 won't help in any way if they want to compete in this series. It's as simple as that.
Finally, James Anderson ends a stellar international career at Lord's, the venue of his very first Test match way back in 2003. So, it has indeed come a full circle for him, hasn't it? 32 five-wicket hauls could not quite become 33, but it doesn't matter. The longevity, the skills and the hunger to keep going beat everything else!
And that will be that for the Test match! Gus Atkinson takes 5 for the innings and James Anderson ends his career with 704 wickets in 188 matches.

46.6 Gus Atkinson to Jayden Seales, OUT! COOL AS ICE THERE DUCKETT AND TAKEN! It's another FIFER for Atkinson on debut as West Indies get bowled out for a paltry 136 and England go 1-0 up in the series. Short into the batter, Seales pulled that one away, thought he's made good connection but Duckett inches near the ropes, pouches it safely.
