Commentary

This loss will feel like a punch to the gut for the tourists - the best they can do is gather their learnings and go into the third Test match at Edgbaston - starting on the 26th of July - and end the series on their own terms. The West Indies put up a commendable fight in the first innings, steering past England's total, but the hosts roared back over the course of the last couple of days or so - Joe Root and Ollie Pope hit hundreds, West Indies suddenly had 385 to chase on a dicey deck, and having started off well, they folded badly, wilting against a quality England attack. Much was expected from this West Indies side - there's plenty of talent and promise among their ranks, and hopes seemed to spike once they beat Australia at the GABBA not so long ago.

Ben Stokes (England captain): Amazing. I thought the comeback we showed after their opening partnership was quite remarkable. Took the 10 wickets for 70 was exceptional to be honest. Bash showed the world what he's about today. The wicket didn't offer as much spin to be honest, the way he manipulated how he wanted the ball to react was top-class. In team sport, you want quite a few individuals to stand up at any given time. What shouldn't be lost is that partnership last night between Brook and Root. That was the toughest batting conditions we had this Test match, ball started swinging, the way they got through that, also were able to put pressure on the West Indies attack was top-class. If we're to be brutally honest, could have got a few more runs in the first innings. Pressure of a fourth innings and 384 runs is a lot. Credit to the whole team for the performance in this Test. This week has been great for the progression this team has made. Ben Duckett second innings was a great example of that - they had different plans but he stuck to his style, when he looks to put the bowlers under pressure that's the best he plays. Joe was Joe - another hundred in an England win. Brookie (Harry Brook) went out and played the house down. On another day, Woody (Mark Wood) would have gotten the man of the match the way he bowled. Woody hasn't got his rewards this game, but look at the number of wickets Woakes picked up from the other end. Bowled his heart out, his pace is phenomenal, to hit those right areas consistently was remarkable. I'm sure he'll get his rewards later. Woakesy found his rhythm on the second day in his second spell, stuck to his guns, changed the game today with that first wicket. The external noise about leading the attack hasn't phased him.

Kraigg Brathwaite (West Indies captain): Decently happy, could have been better with the ball. 120 runs too much. We batted well in the first innings, didn't follow up in the second. The effort the guys had bowling number, it was there to see. Got to be much more disciplined, and England showed us how to bowl on this pitch. The guys will learn, for example Kavem scored a hundred and didn't get much the second innings. That's test cricket. We've got to learn from this and prepare for the future Test matches. We did drop some crucial catches, what we could control is our line and lengths, and the catches. Catches win matches. It's history, we got to look forward to the future. My word for the guys - stay mentally tough, we have a few more Test matches this year.

Ollie Pope is the Player of the Match: A top day for us. I think Stokesy took off there and we got some wickets. We saw it last night, it nipped and seamed around a bit but Brook and Rooty were class always. West Indies also batted well in the first innings but that's how it goes in Test matches, you've got to keep at it. I think it's about trying to negotiate and put some pressure on them when we can. Absolutely, really good about where my game is at the minute, and I think that that gives me the confidence when I walk out there so happy with our plate. So far this series.

Having been set a target of 385, the West Indies openers put up a solid show for an hour or so against the seam and swing from Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, and the sheer pace of Mark Wood. There were moments of discomfort for both Kraigg Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis, but the duo soldiered along - Brathwaite was actually scoring at a decent pace, punishing anything remotely loose.

The West Indies openers proceeded to put up a partnership of over 50 in just under an hour. The players took a drink at the end of the 13th over, and it was after that the tide shifted towards the home side for good. Louis poked at a length delivery around off stump from Woakes, offering a simple catch to Smith behind the stumps, and the West Indies line-up proceeded to fall like a pack of cards after that.

Shoaib Bashir was the chief wrecker - on a wicket which offered a bit of everything - turn, variable bounce and skid through, Bashir extracted a bit of everything. He set the batters up nicely, accounted for Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze with deliveries that turned, and did for first innings centurion Kavem Hodge with one that skidded through to his pads.

Mark Wood, having put up a brief, enthralling show of fast bowling against the West Indies openers, got in among the wickets with a brute of a delivery, which sprung on to Kevin Sinclair, took a bit of his glove and bobbled towards Crawley at slip. Jason Holder and Joshua Da Silva put up a brief resistance, the former going on the attack against Shoaib Bashir's off spin.

Bashir had his man eventually, getting one to whizz past Holder's outside edge and chip the top of off stump. Gus Atkinson came back for a second spell before that and ensured England got to the West Indies tail. Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales had quite a lot of fun during their stay in the middle, until Shoaib Bashir tossed one up, went right past Joseph's attempted slog, picked up his fifth wicket, and England had the series in the bag.

That is that! Comprehensively bowled - the Richards-Botham trophy will return to England after two years! Shoaib Bashir finishes with a fifer - he sure has enjoyed bowling on this deck!

36.1 Shoaib Bashir to Shamar Joseph, KNOCKS HIM OVER! FIFER FOR BASHIR! Tossed up at the stumps and Joseph couldn't resist having another big slog at it. Only this time, he didn't get bat on ball and his middle stump was rattled as a result. England win by 241 runs and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in this series.
