The Sunrisers Eastern Cape again managed to find a way to win a playoff game which helps them go through to Qualifier 2 which will be played against the Paarl Royals in less than twenty hours time. Aiden Markram (Sunrisers Eastern Cape captain and the Player of the Match): Yeah lot better tonight. Before this game, we didn't out a complete game and today was very close to putting on a complete performance. Yeah it was more of the surface, primarily went with the strengths the bowler had. It was quite tough to move away, it was all about the execution and the landing area. It was a tricky one to be fair as you want to cut loose early. I tried to get us into a position where we get the platform and manage to go bang bang towards the end. Marco played a brilliant knock. These are the knocks which go a long way in winning knockout games. Tomorrow will again be played on a used wicket. We don't have to go too far. We have to rest up well and try to go all guns blazing tomorrow.
Faf du Plessis (Joburg Super Kings captain): "I thought the bowlers were excellent. Throughout the tournament, with all the injuries, our bowling was not able to step up. Lutho (Sipamla) has bowled superbly through the season. He has picked wickets with a good economy rate. One bad over at the end there, it happens. With the bat, we have been pretty below par throughout the tournament. We have relied on one or two batters. So, from a batting point of view, this tournament has been disappointing. I think we gave great fight. When you have so many injuries, you would obviously be staring down the barrel. It was scratchy, it was ugly. But we still managed to reach here. The fans were excellent. It was yet again the dominant bowling effort from the Sunrisers Eastern Cape which helped them secure a comfortable win by 32 runs against the Joburg Super Kings and have booked a place in the second Qualifier slated to be played against the Paarl Royals in less than twenty four hours time. The Super Kings were chasing a stiff target and needed the openers to come out all guns blazing.
It was a steady start for them with Faf du Plessis and Devon Conway scoring 25 runs off the first three overs. Conway provided the much-needed impetus in the fourth over by smashing three exquisite boundaries but departed in the very next over. Marco Jansen induced a nick to send back Conway. Faf tried to build a partnership with JP King and took his time initially.
The middle overs were exactly how the Sunrisers wanted. Du Plessis and JP Kings departed in a matter of one delivery and the pressure was very much on the Super Kings. Wihan Lubbe couldn't get any momentum to his innings which put some undue pressure on Jonny Bairstow. He was the lone man who kept JSK in the hunt.
He smashed Dawson for a couple of fours and a six before yorking himself at a crucial juncture of the game. Following his departure, it was always going to be an uphill task for the likes of Evan Jones and Hardus Viljoen. They swing their bat around to no avail, eventually handing the Sunrisers a massive win by 32 runs. Craig Overton, Liam Dawson and Ottneil Baartman chipped in with a couple of wickets each.
