Shelton quickly ascended the ranks with a dedicated drive, reaching a career-high singles ranking of No. 13 in August 2024. He won his first ATP singles title in 2023 at the Japan Open Tennis Championships, defeating Aslan Karatsev in the Final. Shelton lifted his second ATP singles title at the 2024 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships, defeating Frances Tiafoe in the first African-American men's singles tennis final. He finished quarterfinalist at the 2024 Mallorca Championship.

Shelton made an evident mark on the global scene at the age of 20. During his first trip outside of the United States, he demonstrated his prowess by reaching the quarterfinals of the 2023 Australian Open, a tremendous achievement.
