That brings us to the end of our coverage from this PSL encounter. We will be back again later today for the second eliminator between the Peshawar Zalmi and the Islamabad United. Do join us then and for all the matches lined up later today but for now this is me (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty) bidding adieu also on behalf of my fellow commentator and good mate Rajarshi Das. Goodnight! Cheers!
Shadab Khan (Islamabad United captain): Yeah we lost the momentum but we haven't played a proper game so far but we are still in the last phase of the tournament. When we saw the pitch we felt it would get slower so we wanted to bat first. In the second innings after six overs the pitch was getting better and better. I think it's good as well because we have a winning momentum. Hopefully momentum stays with us in the last couple of games. I think how we are starting and not finishing well. Both batting and bowling attack. We didn't bowl as well. We have to work on that. If you get wickets it's difficult to score in the death overs. Despite so many mistakes we are on the winning side so this is good sign for us as a team.
Imad Wasim is the Player of the Match, here is what he had to say: I think what we saw in the last few games it was spinning and gripping. I bowled slow and it really helped. If we take early wickets we will be in the game. I tried to bowl slow today and didn't bowl as many arm balls. We managed to restrict them and also take the wickets.
Time for the post-match presentation ceremony with Ramiz Raja.
Naseem Shah: It was a very important game for us. You can't afford to make mistakes in knockout games. When the whole team looks forward to you to deliver it gives you the confidence. I am enjoying my game. Was trying to bowl aggressively. We wanted to pick the wicket of Roy early. I think credit goes to all bowlers for how disciplined they have been today. Shadab bhai as a leader is very calm and relaxed and just says to focus on the next ball. He gives confidence to all the bowlers.
Rilee Rossouw, Quetta Gladiators captain: We let each other down with the runs this season, just not to be tonight, hope we can be better next year. It's an honour, a privilege for me to lead this franchise, there's a lot of positives to take out from this season. Plenty of youngsters have come along, proved themselves, and very happy we're back in qualifying, that's one right step for the Quetta family. Hopefully we can build on this. They (spinners) have been phenomenal for us all season, the whole bowling department has put their hand up at times, Mohammad Amir leading the way, he's done a phenomenal job on surfaces not suited to fast bowling. (To the fans) Thank you very much for all your support, unfortunately this is the way we end, support the team - we've come a long way, don't hang the boys on the ropes, it's a step in the right direction, hope to do better.
Islamabad United won by 39 runs
Martin Guptill 56(47) | Imad Wasim 3/12(4) Omair Yousuf 50(37) | Mohammad Amir 2/20(4)
It turned out to be a pretty comprehensive win for Islamabad United as they bowled out the Quetta Gladiators for just 135 to advance to the next eliminator. Team in Red came and blew their opposition away and was absolutely clinical with the ball. You can't win a match after losing five wickets inside the powerplay. That is exactly what happened with the Quetta Gladiators. Saud Shakeel was dismissed by Imad Wasim in the opening over which was followed by Jason Roy's wicket of the very Naseem Shah delivery. Rilee Rossouw struck a wonderful boundary but was dismissed immediately after.
Khawaja Nafay also had hit a substandard shot which brought about his downfall. Laurie Evans was dismissed for a golden duck as a terrible mix up resulted in his departure. Akeal Hosein and Omair Yousuf turned the match around with a brilliant partnership. Yousuf took his time but played some wonderful strokes whole Akeal Hosein looked at his best. A flourish saw him hit three sixes during his knock of 31 off 18 deliveries before another mix up resulted in his wicket. He could have turned the game on its head but it didn't happen.
Mohammad Amir then came out with a positive intent and smashed some good blows but the target was way too much in the end. Omair Yousuf went onto score a fluent half-century but couldn't quite take it deep for his team. He was dismissed in the 18th over and it was Hunain Shah who finished the match with an inch-perfect yorker. Imad Wasim and Naseem Shah were the pick of the bowlers bagging three and two wickets each.
18.4 Hunain Shah to Abrar Ahmed, BOWLS HIM! THAT'S THAT! Hunain nails the yorker this time, firing this one in on middle and off. Abrar, as he had done all this while, gave himself room looking to go over the off side, missed, and his stumps end up being a complete mess! Islamabad United march on, claiming this knockout contest by a margin of 39 runs!
18.3 Hunain Shah to Abrar Ahmed, FOUR! Slow, short of a length outside off, Abrar clears his front leg and slaps this one over the in-field towards extra cover
18.2 Hunain Shah to Abrar Ahmed, slow, pitched up outside off stump. Abrar clears his front leg and drags this one straight to the man at mid off
