Commentary

Right then! Mitchell Santner was awarded the man of the match but how important was Jamie Neesham's cameo? Yes, it proved to be a game-defining innings from the southpaw. New Zealand take the lead but West Indies would be mighty pleased with their fighting spirit as they came very close to chasing this, all thanks to Odean Smith and Romario Shepherd

Kane Williamson: The performance was excellent. We know how dynamic this West Indies side is and we are happy with the win. Yeah, it's good to play a nice role and helps the team in the middle. There are some valuable contributions in the middle, even 17 of 10 pushes the innings along. The power is always there in the West Indies team and for us, it's all about executing the plans

Nicholas Pooran: I think as a bowling unit we did very well.We were happy to chase 175 but we conceded few more in the ned In hindsight, yes it was a slow wicket. Santner bowled really. 170-180 was tricky for us on this track but the batters showed a lot of intent. Odean and Shepherd was striking more than 200 and that was a positive for us. We are getting better and better. A couple of things didn't go in our favour.

Mitchell Santner is the Player of the Match. Here is what he has to say: There was a bit of spin which was surprising. The lengths were key against these guys. As a unit, we were able to pick up wickets, which was pretty good. (How CPL helped him adapt to conditions) A lot of it. I've played in the CPL in Trinidad. You find out what kind of lengths work against these guys. A bit surprised to see the spin but that's nice. Throughout our innings, we were able to pick up wickets. They bat so deep, so it's key to keep picking up wickets. Even in the end, we saw some fireworks there. (Williamson's return) It's massive. He's (Williamson) an outstanding player and an outstanding captain. The way he controlled that innings was outstanding and he's also calm in the middle to bounce off a few ideas as well.

This match was supposed to be a one-sided tussle as New Zealand were in firm control until the 15th over. A lot has been spoken about West Indies' batting depth but finally, the team would be pleased to see that onslaught from Smith and Shepherd. From nowhere, the duo clawed the hosts back into the contest and almost pulled off what could be one of the magical chases in T20 history. There is no denying that it turned out to be a huge sigh of relief for New Zealand in the end.

West Indies didn't get off to a good start as Mayers was dismissed cheaply in the second over. Pooran, on the other hand, showed some intent but Santner ended his short stay before Hetmyer and Thomas fell for a single-digit score.

The spinners Sodhi and Santner dictated proceedings in the middle overs and run scoring wasn't easy. Brooks anchored the innings but eventually, he turned out to be Santner's third scalp. Powell and Holder got the starts but they failed to convert it into a big score.

It looked like New Zealand were heading towards a big win but Smith and Shepherd smacked a few monster sixes, and that not only helped West Indies to get closer to the target, but also reduced the deficit of the defeat in the end

Well... This partnership scared New Zealand in the end. It was smooth sailing for them until the 16th over but Shepherd and Smith went into rampage mode and came so close to pulling off this chase successfully.
