Ish Sodhi: A Brief Biography
Ish Sodhi is a leg spinner from New Zealand, born on 31 October 1992 in Ludhiana, India. He was a part of New Zealand’s World T20 2016 squad. He has also been picked in the ICC ODI World Cup 2019 squad.
Background
Sodhi moved to New Zealand from India at a very young age of 4 years. He played all of his cricket in his current country. He commenced his domestic career in the 2012-13 season playing for the Northern Districts in the Plunket Shield.
After impressing the selectors in his debut season in the domestic circuit, he was picked for the national Test side in 2013.
Debut
He made his Test debut on 9 October in 2013 against Bangladesh in Chattogram. He conceded over 100 runs in his first innings. In both the innings he managed to score 23 runs and returned with bowling figures of 3/169. The match ended in a tame draw with both the innings scoring close to 500 runs in their respective first innings.
Sodhi played a T20I for the first time on 5 July 2014 against West Indies at the Windsor Park, Roseau in Dominica. It was a rain-affected game and was reduced to 18 overs a side. He proved to be expensive as he took 1/35 in 3 overs as Windies could manage only 132/8. The Kiwis were ahead of the D/L par score at the end of their 15 overs and emerged victorious.
After close to 2 years post his Test debut, Sodhi made his ODI debut on 2 August 2015 against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club in Harare. New Zealand posted a total of 303 in their quota of 50 overs. Unexpectedly, the home team chased it down with an over to spare and 7 wickets in hand. Sodhi bowled a maiden and returned with figures of 0/65 in his 10 overs.
Club career
He has been playing for the Northern Districts since 2012 in the Plunket Shield which is New Zealand’s first-class competition. So, far he has taken 201 wickets for the team. He is the leading wicket-taker in the 2018-19 season with 36 wickets to his name.
Sodhi played for the Adelaide Strikers in the 2017-18 Big Bash League. He took 9 wickets in 3 matches. He has played just one season in the Australian T20 league.
