Shelton started playing tennis regularly at the age of 12 and was coached by his father. He made his ATP debut at the 2022 Atlanta Open, where he defeated Ramkumar Ramanathan in the first round, for his first ATP win. He won his first ATP singles title at the 2023 Japan Open Tennis Championships.

Ben Shelton rose to prominence when he defeated World No. 5 Casper Ruud in the third round of the 2022 Cincinnati Masters. His best performance in a Grand Slam singles event came at the US Open 2023, where she made the semifinal. He also reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in 2023. Shelton won his first clay court and second ATP singles title at the 2024 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships, defeating Frances Tiafoe in the first African-American men's singles tennis final. He reached the quarterfinal of the 2024 Mallorca Championship, and the final of the 2024 Swiss Indoors in Basel.
