Popularly known as the Prince of Kolkata and Dada, Sourav Ganguly is a former Indian cricket team captain. He was a left-handed batsman and a right-arm medium pacer. Ganguly is famous for bringing about a revolution in Indian cricket under his captaincy and is also known as one of the best ODI batsmen.

Sourav Chandidas Ganguly was born on July 8, 1972, in Behala, Kolkata, West Bengal. He studied at St. Xavier’s Collegiate School. After playing international cricket for many years, Ganguly also served as the BCCI President from 2019 to 2022.

Who are Sourav Ganguly’s Parents?

Sourav Ganguly, the youngest son of Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly, was born in Calcutta on July 8, 1972. Chandidas was one of the wealthiest men in the city, operating a successful print business. Ganguly was nicknamed the "Maharaja” and enjoyed a luxurious upbringing.

Such was Sourav’s popularity in Kolkata that Chandidas did not reveal his identity while attending public events. Sourav described his father as the greatest influence on his career.

Sourav Ganguly is very close to his mother Nirupa Ganguly. She was glued to the TV screen when her son Sourav scored a Test hundred on his debut at Lord’s. In one of her interviews, Nirupa refuted the claims that Sourav had asked a cricketer to carry his bags.

The Ganguly family was rich enough to provide Sourav and his elder brother with a well-equipped gym and a pitch.

Sourav Ganguly’s Father

Chandidas Ganguly is the father of Sourav Ganguly. Chandidas Ganguly was a successful businessman in Kolkata. According to Sourav, his father had the most impact on his professional life.

In addition to serving as assistant secretary for the Cricket Association of Bengal in 1974–1975, Chandidas also held positions as treasurer, secretary, vice-president, and trustee board member. In the late 1980s, he also dispatched Sourav to play in Minor County in England.

Who are Sourav Ganguly's Siblings?

Sourav Ganguly has an elder brother named Snehasish Ganguly. Snehasish tried to become a cricketer, but he could never play at the international level. Sourav was initially a right-handed batsman but switched to left-handed batting in his 10th standard in schooling to sport his brother’s equipment.

Snehasish had talked his father into letting Sourav pick up cricket as his sport in his early days. Currently, Snehasish is the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

Who is Sourav Ganguly's Wife?

Sourav Ganguly got married to Dona Ganguly in 1997. She is an Odissi dancer. Sourav Ganguly's wife, Dona now has a dance school named Diksha Manjari. This establishment was inaugurated by Lata Mangeshkar. It has a capacity of over a couple of thousand students. Besides dancing, this establishment has other departments such as swimming, karate, drawing, and yoga.

Sourav and Dona were neighbors, but it is said that their families were not on talking terms. However, whenever Sourav used to play badminton, the shuttlecock would land in Dona’s balcony, and Sourav would even follow her to her school. Dona and Sourav tied the knot secretly. Both Sourav and Dona kept their marriage a secret before her parents came to know about the situation and were very unhappy. They later had a formal wedding ceremony in the presence of their family and friends on 21st February 1997.

Does Sourav Ganguly have kids?

Sourav Ganguly and Dona welcomed their daughter Sana in November 2001. She did her schooling in Kolkata and then completed her graduation in Economics from University College London.

Like her mother Dona, Sana is a trained Odissi dancer. She is fond of animals and has a pet dog named Sugar. She once appeared in a TV commercial with her father Sourav Ganguly.
